Manga Reborn: The future of manga scanlation?

I saw the news on Anime News Network. It looks promising & I already pledged. 😀

tl;dr Mangaka upload their works, fans translate & scanlate them legally, fans can purchase them to enjoy reading online or downloads. 😀

I wonder if the scanlators will get paid. If not, mangakas and the site owner will make money off them and it doesn't seem fair.

Scanlators shouldn't be in it for the money in the first place, right? Right? Anyway, as long as I don't have to buy the copies myself, and I get a chance to talk to the original author, I'm in.
Except, not.
None of these titles are targeted to female audiences. I do read stuff like Black Jack, but that's beside the point. More and more women are reading manga, and yet we are still largely ignored. 🙁

That's just the 10 titles that want to print. There's a lot more on the website. And they're free (the English versions).
Anyway, Manga Reborn has been around for a while now and it's not very popular. I don't see them becoming the leading website for scanlations any time soon. Not unless they get some better titles.
You can PM me if you need a temporary (freelance) cleaner/redrawer for some project. Especially if it's something with nice art.
Being the lazy person that I am, I'm not likely to accept anything long-term though.

That may apply to 'normal' scanlation, but "if" the site and the authors are making money off this whole thing, scanlators "should" receive a part of it too. Why would you expect them to be the only ones working for free?
The 'no money' thing only applies to that scenario where 'no one' is making any money in the scanlation process.

From a scanlator perspective, the biggest problem I have with that site is that it's so insular. I liked the concept in theory, so I started applying, but the seriousness of that process made me feel like I was applying for a job (without pay!) and completely turned me off.
I'm afraid it is not the future of manga scanlation in its present form.

From what I understand, you DO need to pay in order to get coins, $10 per 1000 coins. Then you spend them to read mangas, about 80 coins per chapter(but it varies a lot). If that is true, then you probably would have to spend nearly as much money as you would if you buy a printed copy from stores. Even if you help out scanlating one of their mangas, you'll only have the rights to read that one particular manga you helped out with in return(but that's understandable I guess) And to be honest, they don't have a great selection of manga. Well not YET anyway.
I too tried to apply to help out there. But the more I lurked their forums the more I felt like I won't have any fun there. Scanlation is supposed to be fun for me, take that away and I'll feel like I have it worse than a slave from Vinland Saga.
Atleast Thorfinn gets free food and lodging xD
I really don't think it's the future of manga scanlations. Maybe if they get bigger titles or make more of a community atmosphere rather than a corporate workshop. But honestly, I don't think that'll happen anytime soon.

Ooh, sounds like a great concept. But just that, and doesn't sound feasible. The good stuff are all owned by grubby, stingy companies. Sharing culture in Japan is different.
Also, I'm not interested in retro manga at all. :C I tried Jojo several times, and I just couldn't do it for how cheesy it was. And the art for all the titles there on that site are hideous.
There's also the problem that many readers are under age and don't have PayPal or credit cards.
As for me, I want both physical and HQ digital copies.

It would be nice if one day, mangaka can upload their own works, have scanlators translate them, and cut out the distributors/ serialization fees out entirely. Like some self-published novels on Kindle. Ofcourse, it is always nice to have a hard copy, but I'm sure popular titles will still be in print.
I'm surprised that there are websites like Mangafox that generate money from ad revenue, yet nobody has tried to make an official free-to-view online manga reader. =\
