I want to start the novel after i finish the anime of sword art online. However, i hate reading the same parts over and over. So uh, i was wondering if where the anime leaves off in the light novel. Or is the anime adaptation totally different??

You should start with volume 4 actually 😀 😀 The first part of volume 4 was left out of the anime for some reason.
Aside from that, yes, volume 5 continues after the end of the anime.

you can skip vol.8c.1 though, you already have seen this one (a murder case in the area)
and yeah vol4 is pretty nice, I was seriously pissed when they left it out...
