Reality Television: Your Opinion?

Am I the only one that HATES reality television? Before the phenomenon of 'reality TV' began, for example, I'd be okay with dating people who weren't interested in the same TV shows as I was - that sort of stuff didn't matter. At all. But now? I cannot date someone who even MENTIONS that they watch reality television. Seriously. I hate it that much.
Please keep in mind that I don't hate people that watch reality TV (I have many beloved family members who do!) - it's just that I hate reality TV, so obviously, I'd rather not be in a romantic relationship with someone who watches it regularly, because I might have to watch it, too. Lol. (Can't avoid family members when they tune in to watch it, though... I just escape to my room. Augh.) I've also found that most of the time, people who like reality TV end up having vastly different ideas/interests than I do - for example, more of them are generally interested in celebrity culture, pop culture, gossip magazines, competitiveness and notions of 'popularity', all things that I tend to dislike or avoid. (NOT that there's anything wrong with those things, in and of themselves - I just don't like them! It's a personal preference.) I'm also not a very competitive person, so those mean-spirited reality shows where they basically rip into innocent competitors kind of... make me sick. Or just really sad. 🙁 So actually, someone liking reality TV tells me a lot about how much I don't have in common with them - most of the time, anyway. There have been a few exceptions.
Truth be told, I wouldn't mind reality TV if it focused on things I find more interesting - like science, mathematics, philosophy, poetry, ancient literature, etc. So far, 'Mythbusters' is the ONLY reality TV program I've found that I can kind of enjoy - because it's about science. (Yeah, I'm a nerd! So sue me!) I'm well aware that even if it weren't reality TV, any other TV program would also be less likely to focus on these areas, because - let's face it - they're not as commercially viable. But even then... Unfortunately, most reality programs, even more so than other programs, focus on areas that I frankly have no interest in - like fashion or celebrities - or, at least, areas that I feel only suffer as a result of exposure to reality television - particularly competitive reality television. Cooking is one of those things that I actually love, but is totally ruined for me if a sadistic, mean-mouthed chef is going around berating people for perfectly good food. 🤨 Generally, I can't shake the feeling that reality TV offers nothing of value to any culture within it exists - or, if it does, it offers nothing that couldn't be offered even better elsewhere, through another medium. But that's just my opinion. Even 'Mythbusters', which I kind of like, pales in comparison to a good, hardcore science documentary. Like I said, I'm a nerd. 😛
This isn't meant to be a bash-fest, although it might sound like one! I just want to know what people think of reality TV, and how many like it or dislike it - and whether I'm right in assuming that I actually am in the minority when it comes to disliking it. 🤣
Note: Please don't bash/criticize any poster for liking and/or disliking reality TV! That isn't what this thread is for. However, you CAN criticize or defend any show you like, as much as you like. Basically: Criticizing a TV show? Okay. Criticizing actual B-U members? Not okay.
😀
most of them seem manipulated to me......

I'm somewhere in-between the first and second option. I don't love it, but I do watch some programs, and like, tune in every week if I can remember to. See, I watch the Apprentice for example, and I'll purposely tune in every wednesday to watch it, but if I miss an episode because I've forgotten or I'm out, I don't really care. I won't go on BBC iPlayer and catch up.
Some programs are actually really amusing to watch. When Big Brother first came out (I actually remember that) it was interesting. Obviously now it's just stupid, but when it first began it was something new.
I guess it's safe to say I like reality TV on the whole.
I'll just go for the last option 🤣

i hate the most of it. There are some like Project Runway, Myth Busters, X Factor and Pimp my ride. But there are things like people who immigrate, VIP (mostly total unkown persons) cooking and many Pseudo-Doku-Soaps which aren´t rare in german TV which makes it horrible to watch TV in the noon. Yeah, doku-soaps are really annoying

For me, it depend on what kind of reality show.
shows like American idol or such is fine for me.
it just in my country there are many Reality Show that turn out deceive the audience.
how can it be a 'Reality' Show when they are manipulating the show?
more over Reality Show local in my country mostly sell out bad side of human.
for example a popular Reality Show that hypnotizing someone/couple to tell their deepest feeling and mostly its about jealousy, cheating, etc. and they will fight and end up broke or make peace depend on how the host act. T___T

I also consider Mythbusters, DIY shows, This Old House, some of the stuff on the discovery and science channel, Top Grear, and How Clean Is Your House? as reality television... which is some of the best shit out there.

I was going to say that I've never watched a "reality" TV show, but then I saw MythBusters mentioned...and we all love that show. How about Antiques Roadshow, does that count? And I have seen some of the DIY shows now & then.
Any of the competition shows, or shows where people are nasty to each other, or shows like Hoarders that have an element of exploiting people, I'm 100% NOT interested in. But then, we hardly watch tv at all - we just get four PBS channels here, & have MythBusters on dvd.

second this.
I must say I rarely watch TV, so... coincidentally when i turn on TV and the only shows which good enough is reality shows then I'll watch it.
I hate local reality shows, but i'm more accepting international reality shows. I watch it but if i miss it, it's okay. I like Amazing Race, it's not the race what i like.. i love travelling to new places and love to see travelling sites

No, I'm the second one 😀 but I probably do not have the right to criticize them so much, since I'm not that familiar with them. Watched some show by chance and didn't like it. Watched another with a friend and found it similar, didn't like it and kept away from those shows as good as I could^^
Most of what I've seen was about people fighting over more or less interesting things. I didn't really find that amusing at all, as I'm a peace-loving person... 😐 and I'm don't wanna be manipulated to like or dislike a participant...
well that's just my opinion though... 😀
There's nothing to see here. Proceed with what you were doing or throw rainbows at random pedestrians.
The only reality TV shows I watch are Project Runway and True Life whenever it's on (I try to avoid MTV). I also watch the beginning of American Idol but only the tryouts. It gets pretty boring when the show gets serious. xD
I'm okay with reality shows... some are good, some are bad. It just depends.

Nope, not my cuppa scald. Survivor used to be enjoyable though, probably because the conestants weren't a bunch of nobody celebrities gossiping and bitching about each other.
