After going through a couple thousand or more manga, I offer the followng suggestions.
1. All Hentai should also be labelled Adult
2. All Smut should also be labelled Adult
3. All Lolicon & Shotacon should also be labelled Hentai
4. All Yaoi & Yuri should be labelled Mature unless they also contain Smut
I also make a difference between "softcore" Ecchi and "hardcore" Ecchi.
I define softcore Ecchi as panty & bra flashes and not much else.
I define hardcore Ecchi as breast exposure to full fledged nudity, but no sex or other adult themes.
This leads to:
5. All hardcore Ecchi should also be labelled as Mature.

Not all Lolicon/Shotacon titles can be labeled as Hentai unless they contain sex scenes. There's plenty of Lolicon/Shotacon that aren't hentai and some of them are ecchi. Also, many smut can be labeled sometimes either as "Adult" or "Mature". Softcore Yaoi/Yuri should not really be labeled as "Mature". I almost agree on the hardcore ecchi stuff.

Ah? Not to be disrespectful, but you don't have even the slightest idea of what you're talking about. Just because you have your own (extremely illogical) way of classifying manga, it doesn't mean this site should also follow. In fact, your method is completely irrational, it just doesn't make sense at all.
While I believe this site should use the correct Japanese terminology for classifying manga (like eliminating "Hentai" for "Seijin") I prefer the current flawed classification system a thousand times more than the senseless thing you are proposing.

Completely agree with you. I'll keep the currently flawed classification eternally.

im against this
hardcore ecchi usually has "borderline h" in the categories
and yaoi and yuri contain lots of sex, thats a given...im sure anyone who picks up a yaoi/yuri manga already knows that. if people wanted to have a much tamer(or sometimes realistic) setting they would pick up shounen ai/shoujo ai
tagging smut manga as mature will be completely pointless...coz that would render the "smut" genre tag useless. when something is tagged as smut, it denotes the presence of mature content
and im sure when people search for hentai they are completely aware of what kind of content to expect...so why tag it as adult?

Why are you all jumping down my throat? I did phrase this as a suggestion, not a requirement. I put a lot of thought into these suggestions and I was hoping to generate some constructive dialogue on how to make this site more accurate, not a personal attack on my ideas.
sarah-eats-cupcakes & MisaoFan has the most "constructive" criticisms. I am open-minded enough to (somewhat) agree with MisaoFan about the lolicon/shotacon issue (I've always thought the current definitions are a little too narrow).
Saying I don't know what I'm talking about after going over thousands of manga & many years of reading sounds like a personal attack to me. You're not being disrespectful, just downright rude.

The admins have already had discussions about how to modify genres. I'm not positive when or if these effects will come into play.
Edit: For the record, lolicon traditionally means attracted to loli, and I'm almost positive a manga cannot be a lolicon. The same logic applies for shotacon. The genre names will be changed.

True, loli/shotacon was meant that traditionally. However, if you do a general search on a browser, you'll find around 90% to 95% of the sites listed are hentai. That shows how the definition of loli/shota has evolved. There's even a further subclass of loli/shota called toddlercon that uses the more graphic definition (which, IMHO, should be banned). I have not seen any manga/anime of that nature, only glimpses of galleries that I immediately close and then clean my computer to make sure I did not get a computer virus.
But I'll grant you the point that not all loli/shota are hentai because of the traditional meaning. However, let me also point out that there are subclasses of lolicon being yuri and subclasses of shotacon being yaoi (or vice versa), but you are only allowed to pick one (if I find one that is both loli & yuri, I'll pick both anyway).
Allow me to go back to my yaoi point. Let's do this: there's 2 classes of boys love (substitute girl for boy for yuri). 1) Shounen Ai and 2) Yaoi. One is really a stronger version of the other. I also believe there's 2 classes of yaoi: 1) Mature and 2) Adult.
I will allow that the seriousness of the mature genre depends on country. In America, yaoi would be considered mature at the minimum. In Japan, Europe, and others, it would not be labeled mature. In other countries, such as Iran & Iraq, yaoi would be labeled adult.
You know, I think I just argued myself out of my suggestions for yaoi/yuri because of my bias of being an American. So, scratch those suggestions. In the world of the internet, we need something more universally accepted despite our biases.
However, my suggestion for something labeled smut should also be labeled adult still stands. You probably could get rid of smut altogether, because all it is is a subgenre of adult.
