So, I'm going to start this off by saying I bought a PlayStation 3 recently after trying to decide between the two HD consoles. This was only a little less than a month ago and guess what I just did? I bought a 360. I had the money on me. I knew I would be near a game store and it was on impulse. I knew I wanted to play a few games on it. That's the problem, though. I only want to play a few games on each console. Competition breeds better and greater things but the cost is astronomical.

I have spent $275~ on the Wii, $520 on the PS3, and $360 on the 360 for a total of... $1,155.

P.S. PC is in it's own separate world and I love multiplayer PC games to death (Starcraft, Diablo, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress 2) so don't bring it up

P.P.S. You can call me an idiot for not waiting for more price drops but add more to the conversation if you are going to do it

---

I'm playing Pac-Man: Championship Edition on the 360 dead

We just have a PS2 (bought used) and an XBox (hand-me-down from my step brother biggrin ) but my kids are agitating for PS3 &/or 360 &/or Wii....which is NOT going to happen; we don't have that kind of $$. dead I would LOVE to be able to have one console that would play everything!!

Maybe each company could have their own version with somewhat different "special features", but all would play all games...something like that...

It would work well in theory if not in execution. Monopolies are generally a bad idea as competition tends to beget innovation. With a loss of competition I fear the industry may become stagnant.

I voted no for reasons Sleepy_Sheepy has stated.

Realisticially speaking, its not going to happen.

I have an Xbox 360. I am getting a PS3 next (possibly within the next month), and due plan to get a Wii when the shortage runs out (before the end of this year, maximum).

When it comes down to it, we all have our preferences.

Xbox 360 has the games I wanna plan right now. However, shortly, PS3 will takeover that.

When it comes down to it, out of my collection, it's mostly PS1 and PS2 games (not to mention a few PSP games).

One console would be nice, but if you look at the history of gaming, we really havn't had that happen yet.

We're talking about consoles here, though. Not the games unless you think they will be affected. Game developers would still need to improve themselves if they wanted to sell their games. PS3 and 360 are more or less the same thing, and systems like the Wii could easily benefit from that extra horsepower. Wii is basically a peripheral-based system anyways.

as for the console thing, i think it's a great idea that will simply never happen.
as companies won't just say Hey let's make all our games work on one console, so that people won't spend too much money.

-Companies hate each other.
-Companies are milking people like cows for money.

No... really a one console future isn't something I'd look forward too. Monopoly is always bad. You're saying that it won't affect game developers but it actually would. Once one company gets the monopoly on the console market... she can start becoming the next Microsoft (or who knows it could be Microsoft itself lol).
She'd be able to favor a developer over the other for some financial reasons, she could favor her own game development studios, the prices for the console itself will climb through the roof (as if it isn't expensive enough now... but think about it, if Sony had the monopole would she have sold the PS3 at that price? she was actually losing money on it....)
In short... I have BIG issues with monopoly. (From previous experiences)

i dont want it to go all for one console, couse then the prices will go up, and i am broke as it is....
plus, like everyone else has been saying, monopoly's are bad.
couse then they can charge whatever they want, and like i said
i am broke. embarrassed

i like the separation of consoles because each group has an entirely different focus for everyone's different preferences.

I actually just bought a PC Engine. I bet it's older than most of the contributers to this forum. FYI - it isn't a PC, it an add on for Turbo Grafix 16 - it's an awesome console, one of the first to play CDs instead of Carts. Been playing Daracula x for a few days now. I think it rounds out my collection nicely, and it reminds me that I would hate to see a one console future where rare gems like this won't be made anymore.

Very true. The Wii is for the mainstream, non-hardcore gamer market. The Xbox is for more mature audiences (of course it's trying, but ultimately failing to be a console for everyone), and the PS3 is for more traditional gamers. I can't imagine a single console that has all three qualities.

I play the Wii when I like to move a little when playing. It's also the best console for playing with friends who know nothing about video games. When I feel like playing more traditional games, I turn on my PS2.

Anyway, I don't think Nintendo (or sony, or microsoft, for that matter) will be where it is now if the console market was a monopoly. I don't think Microsoft would've released that HD DVD extension for the Xbox 360 if the PS3 didn't have Blu-Ray attached to it. I don't think the PS3 would've added the vibration feature and the 8-way motion sensor feature (at the last minute, at that) on the DualShock 3 controller if Nintendo didn't have the amazing Wiimote. I don't think the Wii would have had backwards capability if the PS2 didn't make the idea popular in the first place. And everyone is trying to beef up their online capabilities cause they're losing to microsoft in that area. Everyone is trying to improve themselves because of the stiff competition.

Everyone's borrowing ideas from one another to keep up with the competition, and both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 are actually losing money for every system they sell just so they can keep up with the competition *cough*wii*cough* Microsoft is bribing game developers with millions of dollars so that the once-PS2/PS3 exclusive games can have an Xbox version. And it's trying to add more family games in their library because Nintendo is singlehandedly dominating the mainstream market.

Another no vote for mentioned reasons.

On a personal note, I'd love to get a ps3 for Little Big Planet, the final fantasy games, mgs, etc. but I have a 360 already and I'm unlikely to buy another console at the moment. Everytime i buy a game, I tend to play it religiously for a few days, then never touch it again. Years of playing mmos have put my off other games, so I think I'll leave the console market for now.

No, for the same reasons already stated. Plus I enjoy the console wars bigrazz First we had a two-way war with Nintendo vs Sega, and now we have a three-way war. What fun biggrin You got to love the fanboys. After all they are a great source of amusement though they do annoy as much if not more. On another note, I only own a PS3 which I got for $350 (60GB pre-owned) because thats the only system I want. I mean there are no good RPG's on Xbox. I know this is where Kaioh will shout "Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Infinite Undiscovery" but I heard a lot of bad stuff about Blue Dragon, and the other two are not out yet. Plus I would rather go with stuff I know that doesn't disappoint like Final Fantasy and Shin Megami Tensei.

A Monopoly for the game console market would be bad. Here in New Zealand for a while there was a Monopoly for broadband and that ment we fell far behind other developed countries in terms of broadband speeds and costs.
If the console market was turned into a Monopoly it would stop the need for making better and newer stuff so as prices go up the quailty of the items goes down...
