It's been a long time since I've posted here...how's everyone doing? ^_^;;

I desperately need help with my computer. Last week, my computer crashed so I've been reinstalling all kinds of programs. And last night, antivirus programs started bugging me, so I bought one this afternoon called Antivirus 2009 . The problem I'm having is that another antivirus program, System Antivirus 2008, won't stop popping up every five seconds and insisting to be bought, but I obviously don't need it since I just bought the 2009 version and it seems to be working fine.

Is there some way I can get System Antivirus 2008 out of my computer entirely/stop it from being a pest without having to buy it? I tried uninstalling it via Control Panel, but it doesn't show up on the list where I can add and remove programs anymore and I've already restarted my computer a number of times. I'm considering just buying it, then getting a refund.

Another question: When System Antivirus 2008 does its 'free scan' (even without me choosing for it to do so), it says I have over 47 Security threats, but Antivirus 2009 doesn't pick up any of them (I already scanned and removed the 3(?) threats that did show up on Antivirus 2009's scan). How do I know which one is more accurate?

Or better yet, what antivirus program out there is cheap (preferably) and efficient? What's working for you guys? What's worth purchasing?

Microsoft suggested PersonalAntiSpy; does anybody have that? How is it?

Sorry if I'm being a nuisance, but I'd really really really appreciate any help I can get. If you have a question for me, I'll answer to the best of my ability. Please and thank you!

Um, that's a sure sign that system antivirus 2008 may not be very ligit. And yeah, it's not:

I like/use clamwin, and it works pretty well:

If you want something more complicated but still pretty reliable, AVG offers a good free suite:

Ok, with your antivirus 2008 popping up every 5 seconds problem, go into your Task Manager when it pops up and see if the program is running or not, if its runiing just right click uninstail on it and it might get rid of it, if it does not, it may be in your internal memory and you would have to go to a Computer System Specialist and they won't charge you much to get rid of it.

Personally as a up and coming Computer Engineer, the best virus protection out there that is free of no cost i have to say Advast which will get rid of anything and keeps up-to-date with any new viruses out there and Threatfire for malware and spyware, just google them. Hope this helps 😁

Antivurs 2009 is the updated version of Anivirus 2008. Antivirus 2008 is malware. That is, essentially, you bought a virus program. Since you got everything out already re-reinstall everything and buy a respectable antivirus like Kaspersky, or use a free one like avg or avast.

I second what the others have said.
I use avast! anti-virus. It's a very good, free anti-malware program that has saved me aplenty of trouble over the years. It is well worth the download.
You can find more info here: http://www.avast.com/

Good luck with ridding your computer of the malware! 😐

Oh god, you poor soul. Antivirus 2009 is a -very- icky malware.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Malwarebytes is a cleaner which targets that fairly quickly. Run that and other trustworthy antivirus/spyware programs (Super Antispyware, Avast, AVG, CCleaner etc.)

I hope you never believe popups masquerading as alerts again.

What he said.

Open source software can do most stuff you want... even if you work in a MS Office environment (Open Office is great)...... lot's of user-friendly distros available.... Anime and manga viewing won't be a problem either.... and it's all free.

If you insist on staying with Windoze, then I've been told that Avast and Clamwin are pretty good.

You could also get a Mac, but you don't seem like the fashion-victim type, thank goodness. 😛

jeez...you two are always 'install linux, install linux....'

i second avast and AVG...also you might google it, you never know, somebody probably had a similar problem and posted in some forum...i got rid of something called Disk Knight that way..

but the best solution would be to burn your data and install linux 😐

I had that problem just go to the start menu and click uninstall from there. once that is done. go to the actualy folder on your C drive, it should read antivirus 2008 and delete that folder. restart your computer then run your a real antivirus program ( like Mcafee). this should stop the annoying pop ups. 😀

can't believe no one has mentioned this yet, but seeing as you bought the 2009 version, I would highly suggest monitoring your credit for the next few months. Also see if you can cancel the payments that you have already given out due to fraud.

I posted a link higher up in the thread.

And clamwin is open source, which rocks. Though really, I don't think the poster needs to install linux, just be a little more careful in installing stuff.

Here is my suggestion.

Get Avast home Edition as an antivirus. It is free there is always at least an update a day to keep the comp safe from new threats. Also it is very light on the System.

For a dedicated firewall, I say go for Zone Alarm free edition as it is quite good and very trustwothy. If you don't know to configure a firewall so that your other programs and Windows inbuilt system apps may run smoothly then get a friend to do so or just ditch the firewall wall.

Get Spybot - Search and Destroy as a malware and Spyware checker.
