god is something that humans created in ancient times to unite the people under something all powerful that they could not defy...however this all backfired for a "complete unity" because it happened in other parts of the world at just around the same time; which, in the end, resulted in wars being fought over which god was the true god. Therefore, while it was created to unite the people it instead made the people who had high beliefs in their god fight each other resulting in massive numbers of deaths. So basically, god backfired.

Well for me God is power but I don't mean it metaphysically: the easiest way to manipulate a mass of people is try unquestionable faith and fear - the essence in most of the religions, when this power is doubted there is always prosecutions - the hunt of the scientists in the middle ages, the repressions against those who oppose the Stalin's Cult of personality (which was actually a dropout from ecclesiastical school). If you want to gain power and control thy must become God himself.
god is god. nuthin to it. ~~anddd... what does god have to do with manga?

"God" (the word) is pretty much the only thing that connects all those that are, or can be, called god. You can't define god when it means so many different things. That name's the same for them for one reason because when Christianity spread, they adapted the old names for deities or spirits or something for it.
You can't really define a god, because it refers to a complete different kind of being in different religions and beliefs.

I'm sure we don't.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duncan_MacDougall_(doctor) this is the experiment, it is just a hypothesis.
Yeah, but who's confirmed it? If it really works, why is there only one person who's tried it? I'm not saying it's wrong, it's just not convincing.
No one has replicated his results. So it's likely either a fluke, an incorrect measurement or an outright lie.

I once had a protestant Christian try to convert me. After a 5-minute conversation in which I explained that all the things he relies on his belief in God for, I get from myself, he told me that I was my own God and never tried to convert me again.
God is an imaginary friend for adults.
No offence to anybody who believes in him. My religious beliefs are just as, if not more crazy. And hey, if he is real then you'll be the ones laughing when I'm burning for eternity, right?
I am my own god.
or may be He's an alien??

i dont know about most atheists way of thinking but the reason i dont believe god or the god of the abrahamic religions to be more accurate is that i truly believe that no human deserves to go to hell

Even someone like Hitler?
God is a great, conceivable being, but that doesn't necessarily mean he exists. He's around to serve as concept that gives people hope that they're lives "are in good hands."
I don't believe in him, but I don't hate him. I hate organized religion and the supposed rules and concepts that are supposed to be followed. Too many contradictions. Not my taste. 🙁
A word.
No, I do not believe in a god.
Just like you do not believe in all the gods that
have existed and to the people of the past, present
and future, those gods that you and I do not believe
in are or have been very real. There are so many gods
both existing and dead, on the conceptual level, that
no god is special or more true than any other.
I don't need a god. It has no place in my life
and honestly, the way gods are, I would make
a better god than vast majority of those
attention whoring gods who demand you to worship them.

My personal belief is that God is a story told to people to keep them from doing things the society considers wrong. You might have noticed that in every religion, God alway tells people to behave in a certain way. If they fail to comply with the standards set by the relegion, then they shall be punished - sent to hell, or something along the same lines. God has also evolved overtime to become a scapegoat for catastrophes and also a way to attain power, social standing and/or money in society, somethings that almost everybody seems to want.
God is a nice concept, as are Fate, Destiny, Karma, Kismat and everything like that. These concepts are made so that people can believe that there is someone watching who will do the right thing, who will look after them, who will help them out. They are made so that people do not have to face the fact that life is big risk - even if you do everything right, the whole world may go wrong and there is nothing you can do about it.
Powerless, much?
There are times when you will miss what you never had. I wonder how you will find what you so desperately need.

Wasn't there a topic about God before? I think it was locked because people ended up ranting and flaming.
What it is that it is atheists finds so unbelievable about god and always this about that there is no prof but what would acceptable proofe look like?
As an atheist, to answer your question: It's just, if you think about it, religion are mostly the same. Even though there's Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Various native mythology...etc etc all these center around obedience. Obedience not to God, but to the word of man from thousands of years ago. Think about the Bible for example, who wrote the word of Christ down? The saints. Who are we really giving our faith to? Not God, not Jesus, but the Saints. We put faith in these men from 2000 years ago not to lie to us. Religious people don't have faith in God, they have faith in the word of men long dead.
It is merely impossible to prove the existence of the all powerful Abrahamic God. Since God is omnipotent and all powerful, you can't measure his power, and no it's not 999999.
Think about a God battery, it has infinite power. P=V*I so either parameter or both parameter are non zero and infinity. What kind of voltmeter can you use to measure that? None. There's no scientific equipment to measure the power of a being and declare the being omnipotent and all powerful.
Also keep in mind that even if you disprove all religion's claim in historical foundation and events of humanity, like the Garden of Eden or something, you just proved that particular religion is not correct. You still haven't proven anything about God.
