And when they aren't sure they just tell you they aren't sure because the baby's position isn't favorable, there is nothing to gain by lying or guessing.

No one gives a shit what trite garbage you write here.

A lot of parents decide on a few names they like and then make the actual decision once they see the baby. Your baby might end up looking more like a "Liam" than a "Noah," so having a little flexibility on the name might be nice.

Also, for those who mentioned it, ultrasounds can be wrong since you can't see the baby's image with perfect clarity. Most of the time they're right, but sometimes they're wrong. A female friend of mine told me her parents thought she was going to be a boy when she was born because the doctor misread the ultrasound.

(Out of curiosity: Babies get pretty cramped in the womb by the end of a pregnancy, so I wonder if it's even still possible to check gender after a certain point since the baby doesn't have much room to move around in anymore. Anybody know?)

I think it depends on where you're planning to live with your family and the meaning of the name is very important. For instance, if you're going to live in a Spanish speaking country a name like Noah would bring a lot of mispelling and mispronunciation along, and Alicio would make kids laugh at him. At least in my country, it's like naming a little girl "Jorga".

An example, a couple of friends, she's mexican, he's from the US, they live in Southamerica. They named their little girl Brianna.... aaaah you can't imagine all the teasing.

Now, Liam and Giovanni are pretty easy to get to pronounce correctly... so check the meaning. The first means "helmet, protection"; the second one "God is gracious".
