How did you learn IRC?

Um...hello everyone!
Sorry to be a bother about something that seems to basic to all of you but I kind of live in the middle of nowhere in rural america (though right now i'm visiting a big city 😀 )and there aren't many other people interested in manga out where I live, so I don't really know who to ask. (My friends who are into it don't know much more than me.)
I just got back into manga recently and I thought this time that i wanted to really try to be more properly involved, like I want to learn IRC and maybe how to clean scans or typeset or something. So I just wanted to ask: where did you learn that? And: How did you specifically learn that or hear about it? What was your first experience? Did a friend teach you in person?

Sorry, that might have seemed a tad rude. But seriously, nothing beats reading documentation. That way, you'll at least be able to ask more specific questions if/when you do encounter an issue.

Personally, I learned some basic IRC using different tutorials on the internet (for commands) like this~
http://theanimelounge.com/threads/downloading-manga-via-irc-tutorial.14030/ - has pictures
http://www.mangascreener.com/irc.php - more pictures
http://animefiends.net/help/leech.php - primarily commands you will need to know for downloading
Though...Chatzilla for Firefox makes things easy (for me anyways). All I need to do is find an IRC link, click it, and it opens the channel up for me 🤢
ex: visit: https://nipponsei.minglong.org/chat/
^click the link " #nipponsei @ irc.rizon.net" on Firefox with Chatzilla addon installed, should automatically open up the channel xD
You will need a packlist in order to download. They typically look like this:
https://nipponsei.minglong.org/packlist/archive/
In this case, it's pretty easy. All you need to do is find the command (at the top of the page)
** To request a file, type "/msg Nippon|zongzing xdcc send #x" **
Replace the "x" with the number of the file you want.
Let's say you want [ aznmp3 Nipponsei]One Piece Character Suits Series 1-3 [192kbps.2004.09.29].tar
You will put in the following command in the chat: /msg Nippon|zongzing xdcc send #1
Press "Accept" when there is a message that pops up in channel that asks if you want to download and presto!
^Cut throat easy way for most of the easy IRC downloads. The other links provide more commands you will need to know for downloading.
If you just want to chat, just need to join the channel and chat like any ol' IM client
PM command: /msg (whoever) (message)
ex: /msg martiantree776 hey!!!!

I learned about IRC back when it was still underground, so it was all trial and error.
Anyone remember going to Yahoo Chat to get XDCC lists?
