This is sort of a follow-up poll to last week's, also suggested by F_J. Do you use Discord?
You can submit poll ideas here https://www.mangaupdates.com/topic/kilkdnn/site-manga-poll-suggestions
Previous Poll Results:
Question: How many scanlation groups do you follow for updates?
Choices:
- None - votes: 806 (52.7%)
- 1-5 - votes: 350 (22.9%)
- 6-10 - votes: 147 (9.6%)
- 11-25 - votes: 97 (6.3%)
- 26-50 - votes: 52 (3.4%)
- 51+ - votes: 76 (5%)
There were 1528 total votes. The poll ended: January 25, 2025
I wonder how those groups that pay for translations survive long term...

I'm in a lot of servers, but I say nothing. I don't have time 😢 life's too busy.

I was in a few in the past... But quit all of them, when discord started purging some due to DMCAs

I haven't been on discord in years, so while I think I was in one or two way back in the day, I'm definitely not now.

I was in a few, never really said anything except for when they have game bots. Then I heard rumors of the DMCA scare, and quickly left every single one because I made that Discord account as a kid using my real name :(

I really only talk with the members of the one group, but they haven't had a release in god knows how long. To be fair, the server is basically a rebranding after the leader suddenly vanished, love those folks so much, though the regular chatters have changed a bunch.

What is that purge/dmca notice you are all talking about? Did it happen recently?

Oh no. It happened before COVID. Korean publishers started a DMCA campaign against scanlator groups (webnovel fan translations too) and fan translations, and then Japanese publishers also joined and they started taking down a bunch of fan sites because "they were taking money away from the author by stealing the work and republishing it" by reporting in bulk. A lot of good fan scans got hit and became obsolete. Websites, discords, blogs even. discord use to be a website alternative for sharing chapters, but then the DMCAs came, and discord policy change just deleted servers without warning.
I think it came about because people started sharing fan translations in bulk and somehow caught the attention of the author/artist who were like, wait a minute, my work doesn't have an official translation. Where are they reading my stuff? That's why there are so many credit pages with "don't repost on social media" now. It didn't use to be that way.

Yup! I'm in multiple Discords and I'm a member of multiple groups, including my own.

It feels like the joy of sharing and discovering new series is getting crushed by these DMCA actions. I miss the days when fans could freely share their love for the stories without worrying about getting shut down.
