Genre Suggestion

Yes, I know what you're thinking: "Another one?!".
Well this is one that's been pretty overlooked, yet very significant in the world of manga.
The "profession" genre.
For example:
- Yakitate!! Japan, about bakers
- Say hello to Black Jack and Team Medical Dragon about doctors
- Firefighter Daigo, about firemen
- Capeta, about race-kart drivers, and later on F1 pilots
- Tokkyuu!!, about the coast guard
And so on, and so on.
Many of these are hard to categorize under anything else, yet "profession" is like a red line connecting all of them.
Personally I'm a big fan of this subgenre, so I'd love to see this implemented.

Bad idea, and they already said no more genres.
And it was overlooked before it's too specific. Genres are meant to be broader.

What, gender bender is an acceptable genre, but this isn't?

Well, gender bender is a lot more clear cut, as well. How serious does a guy have to be about his job before the manga falls in the "profession" category? Is magician a profession? How about thief? Whereas in a Gender Bender, if the main character is passing him/herself off as a girl/guy, we know it's a gender bender.

I'd have to agree with x0mbiec0rp on this one. "Profession" isn't really all that cut and dry. Got more reasons to back up your suggestion, barbapapa?

Well, take "sports", that's pretty much the same deal. Except much more incorporated, as everyone is used to it.
Except where in those manga you have a deep focus on the details of certain sports, the manga I'm talking about really go in depth on certain professions in a most realistic way that's hard to place in other genres. What I call a "clear cut" focus on one aspect, more than the other.
Like if people asked you what say, Eyeshield, was about. You'd say it's about american football (read: sports)! That beats the hell out of saying, "it has comedy elements, and it's shounen lol".
Same thing with Firefighter Daigo. If people ask me what that is about, I'm not gonna say it has "drama", I'll say it's about firemen.
It might seem like an odd choice, because there aren't a lot of popular series (besides Yakitate) that can be labeled as "profession" manga. So I can understand if my suggestion will be passed up.

Once again, it comes back to the definition of a profession. Prostitution is a profession. Thievery is a profession. Education is a profession. Furthermore, there are not that many titles that come to mind that would fit in the colloquial professions. Too broad a genre suggestion.

GTO is about a profession. So is Doujin Work. Kodomo no Jikan is about a teacher dealing with problem children. Skip Beat is about a girl becoming a professional entertainer. Professionals aren't uncommon in manga.
But still, you need to have a more clear cut definition, too. Many sports manga are about professionals in that sort of field. Many martial arts manga are about professionals in the martial arts fields. Suzuka is about sports, but not defined by it, like you say sports manga should be. Neither is Power!! It's an element that makes the manga novel, but doesn't define it. But if we just hit on professionals like that, we can include many, many more titles that have someone especially skilled in any sort of field that could be defined as a profession. Your definition is a little broad and open to interpretation at the moment. Maybe if you narrowed it somehow?

How bout adding an Incest genre? I know a few non-hentai manga with Incest as one of their main theme such as Tsumi Ni Nureta Futari.

If you can maybe ... make it a word other than "Profession".. we might be able to work with it.

Before this topic gets killed/locked, I had a couple of thoughts about other potential genres. I know MU isn't looking for any more so if you say "no, dumb/unnecessary idea" I will completely understand and not push for it anymore. Anyway, what about 4-koma/gag manga, and what about manga about animals/pets (i've seen a fair number of cat series, hamster series, etc in recent months)? I know those are random, but it seems like Japan does have some prominent series that would fit those "genres." I think if people are interested in those kinds of stories/series, it could be an easy way to find more like them. Maybe?
As for profession-manga, I don't really see it as practically applicable unless, yeah, you could find a way to narrow the definition. "Career-focused"?
