Good Manga/Anime Live Action Films

I thought I would start a post about good manga or anime movies that have gone to live-action. Here is the ones I know and a little about what I thought when I saw them.
Old Boy - An amazing live-action movie from a renowned Korean director, similar to the manga
Dragon Head - A pretty good show with an excellent cliff-hanger ending, similar to the manga
DevilMan - Kind of sappy, with some sort-of-good special effects
Battle Royale - An excellent manga to live-action conversion except for a few minor changes that I didn't like
Riki-Oh - The bloodiest movie I have ever seen. Cheesy as hell but very entertaining. I have never seen the manga associated with this one so I can't compare them.
GTO - I was kind of disappointed with this one, GTO doesn't even have bleached hair. See it if you have read the manga or seen the anime, interesting enough because of that.
Shinobi Heart Under Blade - Based on the classic japanese tale of forbidden love between two shinobi clans. Similar to Basilisk, but also very different.
Death Note - The Death Note movie just recently came out in Japan, but I have not had a chance to see it yet, hopefully I will get my hands on it soon.
Perfect Blue - Based on the story and anime of the same name, I was kind of dissappointed with the overall flow of the show.
Sky High - Fairly similar to the short manga, but rather well done. The budget seems a bit low but all in all I enjoyed the movie.
Battle Royale 2 - Tries to continue the story from the first, but fails with a contrived plot and horrid acting.
Ichi the Killer - Amazing live-action manga movie. The actors and cinematography is excellent. Be warned that it follows the same gruesome path as the manga, just not as much.
And after all that here is my pick for the top five mangas I would like to see recreated as live-action films.
- Berserk
- Blade of the Immortal
- Blue Heaven
- Air Gear
- Gantz

By the way, i just read in the internet a while ago, that NANA was the 5th or &th most succesfull japanese movie last year.
to your list, i have almost seen none of them. I saw parts of the Battle Royal movie, but didn't watch it to the end because i really disliked the manga. ( don't ask me why )
Old Boy was really a bueatifull movie, and very well done. Still a bit disturbing at times. Loved the way he eats the still living octopus. 😛 Yummy,
Hmmm, I am not sure what kind of Manga makes a good movie, but i guess it is important, that it is not to long. ( the manga i mean ) Trying to put GTO in one movie is just impossible.
I go for Dead End, Four Volumes schould be able to be put into a long Movie. Has a good Plot. Its not a good Idea to make a movie out of a manga that is built to much like a series. ( multiple small endings, and so on )
Other wishes, ( since they are wishes no sense has to apply )
I want the Akira manga ( not the movie ) turned into Akira I II and III, and after that i want the final three Books filmed as Akira Episode 1 till 3.
Hmmm, what else. OMG, could anything imagine what a film of MadBull34 must be like?
It would be the trashiest Flick in Japanese Cinematographie.

Hehe, i don't know many people who have seen madbull, but it is still one of my favorite anime series. The voicework on the english dub is classic amazingly enough.

i have seen a few of the movies/series (as GTO is a series and there may be others) listed above. Old Boy kicked ass on too many levels. Battle Royale was cool and bloody and you gotta love Kitano 'Beat' Takeshi's role in the movie.
I cant think of series i want to be live action but we should keep in mind some series can't work as live action anything outside of a huge budget movie. One series to note with this one is Berserk. How in the hell could they do the over the top scenes in this series without completely shitting on the original work?

I havent seen to many either. But from the ones I've watched they were pretty good. The ones that come to my head is Old Boy (which I probably wouldn't have watched but saw a review for it on G4 and the guy said it was really good and had a shocking ending) and Kamikaze Girls (loved it). The Nodame Contabile L-A series currently airing is really good to.
I would love to see a Love Hina adaptaion and maybe a Haruhi one. But I doubt those will ever happen, but there's always Hahiru I guess...

theres a new hana-kimi live action out, although i didnt like the manga, but i might watch tht
Name: Bikuki
Date Of Birth: xx/xx/19xx
Location: XX
From: The Place That Rhymes With China.
Fooled you, sucker.
Shinobi Heart Under Blade has no connection to manga or anime at all. Basalisk and it were simply based upon the same novel, hence they are seperate adaptations. I don't think it should be on that list.
Also, I have some movies not listed. Though, these were not made in Japan.
Guyver 1 and 2, G-Savior (Live action gundam!), Fist of The North Star, City Hunter (Jackie Chan is hilarious in this), and Dragon Ball. The Guyvers were American made, while G-Savior was Canadian/American and Japanese produced (For the 20th Anniversery of Gundam). FIst of The North Star was a Canadian production. City Hunter and Dragon Ball were made in Hong Kong and China, respectively.
And one that was, but isn't on the list is the Densha Otoko movie. It was made in Japan, and wasn't just a Drama (though I liked the drama more).
However, a few manga also have become live action through dramas, such as the Gokusen drama, the GTO one, and the Kimi Wa Petto drama (Aswell as the aforementioned Densha Otoko).
As for series to be turned into a movie, hmm, I have never really thought about it that much.
Here's what I'd like to see in live action form, though:
Angel Sanctuary (I think if done properly, this would make a better drama than a movie)
Bastard!! (Mmmmm, random acts of violence to rock music)
Dot Hack (it could be an entirely new story that is part of the overall story, this would also be a better drama than a movie)
One Piece (Could be fun, but could also suck).
Saikano (Drama please! 😀 )
Shounan Junai Gumi (Why not, GTO was the highest rated drama of all time, SJG could do good, too)
X/1999 (Drama this one, aswell)
Those are the only ones I could really see transfering well between the mediums. Of course, it'd be easy for, say, Vagabond and Rurouni Kenshin. Samurai movies are popular and easier to do. I also noted that alot of these would make better dramas than movies, thats because they'd require time to develop the characters along with the plot. We've already seen what an X/1999 movie looks like, and it sucked.
Welcome to Manga-Updates!
If you're new, please read the rules.

GTO live action is amazing, but watch the drama, not the movie.

Since the thread seems to be full of shonen themes, allow me to throw in my two cents with Kimi ni Todoke. I know the theme seems to be an overused-growing-up-slice-of-life kind of genre, but I think they pulled it off quite well with the movie.
I usually frown with disdain at live action romance movies (especially those adopted from shoujos... the humor and dynamics just don't translate well -_-) but this one transitions quite well. Highly recommended. The actors seems spot on, the plot kinda moves fast but not in an unbearable sense, overall a pleasant movie.
