I thought there was something strange about that chapter a few months ago but couldn't quite remember what seemed wrong about it. After seeing th SetsunaXKonoka pactio topic I remembered that Pactio required a kiss (?).

How can Negi have a pactio with himself? Was this ever explained in the manga and I just completely missed it?

Negi never makes a pactio with himself. The item he uses to summon the artifacts of those with whom he has made contracts with, is the result of his pactio with the Horned Princess (the dark skinned one who he meets along with Pres. Seras and that other guy).

No? i think what Hubris meant is about Negi powering himself in the begining of series. He did'nt made paction then, he was just channeling magic into his body for physical enhancement, its similar to slight pactio. He even needed to activate contrat for himself. Later it was replaced\upgraded into Batle Hymn\Song of Battle. so...)
