I agree, it is very overrated. While I do not hate it, it's pointless and drab, no comedy whatsoever, and I can't find a reason to rewatch it ever.

Anyway, the movie is freaking amazing. With this last film, Christopher Nolan has officially become my favorite director. He has a crazy streak going. Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, and Inception. All are critically acclaimed movies. His "worst" movie is The Prestige, but that movie is amazing. And Hanz Zimmer is a genius composer. The action sequences were awesome, but it wouldn't have had the same intensity if not for the perfectly composed music.

Anyway, apart from Christopher Nolan films, some of my other favorites are:

City of Angels
Philadelphia
V for Vendetta
And a few others that I know I'm forgetting.

The book Paprika was written in 1993 I believe. The movie was made 2006.

A lot of Nolan fans argue that he did not copy off Paprika, because he's been working on the script for apparently 10 years. He might have, or he might just be making it up. Even though they are both good movies in their own right, I believe he did copy off the movie, because quite a few scenes and motifs were the same. (ie, reality shattering like a mirror or glass)

A lot of Paprika fans think it's all ripped off, but Nolan did change the story and made an almost entirely different movie. Sadly know one will call him out for plaigirism because Paprika isn't that popular with Westerners compared to Ghibli films.

They're similar in their concepts, presentation, and some scenes, but Inception is more serious, and it's basically a heist movie or similar to one.

Pan's Labyrinth and El Orfanato. i'm the biggest Guillermo fan there is, but mainly the spanish movies, really. and i think pinnochio and the hobbit are gonna also be some more faves when they come out. :]
i also like Silent Hill, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride. Tim Burton is a genius.

ummm and also Jay Chou's Secret. anyone watched this before? it's a Chinese movie.

Well, all of those things you just listed means it's not plagiarism. Plagiarism is not simply the copying of an idea, but the copying of how an idea is presented. He may have copied the basic concept of Paprika, but he took the concept and did something almost entirely different (your words). That means it's not plagiarism.

And this is just my point of view, but I hate using the word "copying" for anything. Copying is made to imply the same thing as plagiarism. If you "copied" the other, I don't think it's copying at all. I think it's just inspiration. One person saw, or read, someone's idea and used that basic idea to create something original. Like how some people criticize The Rolling Stones for copying other people's music, when all they really did was take inspiration from others music to make their own. Maybe Nolan thought of the idea first, and Paprika took inspiration from it, or maybe it was the other way around. Or maybe two innovative minds thought of the idea on their own and we're drawing connections that don't exist.

i saw that movie 3-4 times the first day i got my hands on it
[and i was like 16-17...so i was not that young lol]
i loved that movie
it got me into listening to the old radio shows
its very relaxing to listen to
and interesting

so not only is the alec baldwin the shadow my favorite movie
it also made me interested in the radio drama
that proved to be awesome...for the most parts
