I've been reading quite a few LNs recently and I noticed that they always describe beautiful girls with "big eyes" and "snow-white" skin. I know this is a standard of beauty in Asian countries but are you guys attracted to girls with "snow-white" skin? I personally would rather see a girl with a slight tan over someone extremely pale or albino looking. What do you guys think?

Yeah, I think white skin looks more feminine.

I'm not sure how it is among other people, but there's also a noticeable sex difference in skin tone among the Japanese. The women are a bit lighter-skinned and the men a bit darker. Probably a product of millennias of sexual selection.

Agreed with kLuTz243. It seems to be part of some sort of idealized image of a sheltered princess. People who live normal lives and get out and soak up their fair share of the sun don't usually have pale skin. When I see someone with really pale skin I usually worry a bit about their health. biggrin Like, are you getting all your vitamins? Skin looks better with a little color.

I'd rather see a pretty girl regardless of skin color. bigrazz

White skin has long been the standard of beauty in other cultures as well, even in Europe. It just shows that you don't get out in the sun every day... that is, you're not a stinking peasant. It's not just the skin color, avoiding sunlight slows the aging of skin as well. And now that we're all aware of skin cancer, that is a consideration as well.

Although it is amusing to see Japanese women walking around with umbrellas on a sunny day.

Long story short: Its the "yamato nadeshiko" image.

And then of course; when you start talking about text, its hard to describe something as "a little bit tan" or "a little bit brown" or "a little bit white" so most writers simply go "white skinned" or "dark skinned".

I think everyone can look great regardless of their skin tones, but [i] prefer to be very pale. There are people who look better with pale skin than with tan skin, and I'm one of them. ^^;

The ones who say that they worry about the health of pale people should know that many of them shouldn't get tanned because of melanoma. I'm a pale girl and everytime I see a doctor he/she tells me I must avoid sun because my moles. And just because someone is pale it doesn't mean he/she doesn't get out, everybody has its own skin type, when I was youger and I wanted to get darker I just burned my skin even with sunscreen SPF 50+.

In my life I've liked both pale and dark skinned girls, so I guess it's not really a factor I take into consideration

You prefer tan or darker, others prefer white and albino.
White people are people, too.

A lot of manga was and is being written to appeal to a wider audience.
The "big eyes" is the representation of the western double lidded eye.
The white skin is what's common in western society.
And it's not like the Japanese aren't pale themselves.

All Cats are Grey at Night so i don´t differentiate wink . Especialy if i consider that i am half black myself...
The standard of snow white skin is a very old beauty standard as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will tell you and Japanese high society used to put on white make up (and color their teeth black too). France did the same so the theme of the thread is very universal for predominantly white societies.

And now a word on Japan (or Sony Netherland i guess) and their racial politics: User Posted Image

Basically all manga are written for the Japanese market. They don't care about the overseas audience.

And manga eyes are exaggerated to convey emotions. It doesn't have anything to do with real-world anatomy. They wouldn't look any more realistic on caucasians either.

Well, " Snow White " skin is something you normally hear in Chinese LNs. Asian " Snow White " skin and European white skin are different. In the past past people of west used to describe Asian skin Yellow. But, well, that goes different way.
So, on the subject. You can take a Blonde and A Japanese/Korean girls. You'll be able to see the clear difference between them. Albino is a bit close to Asian snow white skin though.
Skin tone like height partly depends on Global Positioning of a country. Countries situated in North-East Asia has more fair skin than countries from south-west side. Weather takes a big part in it.

Now what type of girl you would love, it goes to your personal preference. kLuTz243, buddy you're probably into Latinas. smile wink grin
For me, what I seek is Beauty, Sexiness and Hotness in a girl; not the skin tone. ^^
