I'm trying to bring all of the manga community together in a little way.

79419
That's our team number for Baka-Updates.

If you have questions after reading this post, post the question in this thread, pm me, or email me at lambchopsil@gmail.com. Please tell anyone else in the manga community about our team!

If you know what Folding@Home is, there's the number you need! For all of you who don't know what the heck I'm talking about, keep reading.

IMPORTANT
DO NOT choose "deadlineless" work units

Just some links for more info.
http://folding.stanford.edu/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folding%40home

Folding@Home (F@H) is a computer project that takes unused CPU power from your computer to simulate the folding of proteins in the body. This will help the researchers at Standford study proteins and find cures for certain diseases, such as cancer and Alzheimer's Disease. This means you can help mankind by just installing this program and letting it run. This is a low priority program in terms of CPU power. For all you people who don't understand, it means by running this program, it will not slow down your computer when you play all those hardcore games. (Program runs in the system background.)

Now, teams are for a group to have a combined score to beat other groups in terms of score. There aren't really any rewards except for e-penis, if you know what I mean...BUT, it's for helping out mankind, so why not join? Other places have teams, including real-life companies or the infamous 4chan. Why not have our community of manga readers try to beat 4chan? That would be cool!

Once we start having some WU (work units), I'll post up the stats page for our group.
Edit: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage& teamnum=79419

Edit2:
We're developing a feature for the forum that will show a symbol next to your name if you join to Baka-Updates F@H team

Edit3:
If you joined our F@H team, we made a gear icon that shows up next to your profile! (Just look at mine for an example.) To enable this on your own account, edit your profile via the User CP. In the 2nd section, choose "Yes" for "Show Folding@Home Icon?"

Isn't there also one for decoding information from outer space? Can you sign us up for that one too?

huh.....I thought April Fool was already over......or am I just really outdated on current science....

So we install this program and let it run it's stimulation of protein folding and it sends data from our computer to the main one for combination.

I say a good, 70 maybe 80 percent of the people on the planet does not know protein folding, and I'm one of them....

Well, that includes me, and that's why I let the computer do it for me! If you don't wanna run the program for whatever reasons you have, it's your choice. But why not just run it? It's small to download, easy to install and set up, and it's set so that you don't have to worry about it afterwards~

Oh, hey, I recognize this, an internet tech program I watch called DL.TV has accumulated a pretty massive collection of people doing this project. They have one guy who has an entire room of servers dedicated entirely to this project. As a result I think they are ranked 30-something...

I'd always avoided it because I thought "unused pc cylces" meant maximizing your processor to 100% of its resources (and I didn't want to overwork my computer). However, since you say it is not that (which makes more sense)...

I'll give it a try biggrin

I saw the advertisement for this program some time ago. Can't remember when. Well, I'm not going to participate in a program I know nothing about. I guess I'll try it after I read about it.

This is just a total surprise to me. Coming on a manga site and finding something smart.

nah it runs in the background it shouldnt cause any probs with your computer.
It does it by setting its priority level on your computer to the lowest level for the process that runs it. So pretty much anything you do will have priority over it in the process que on your computer, therefore it just slows down when your are doing something that takes up your computers power and speeds back up when your idle. Also you can change its priority in its settings and change how much precentage of your comps power it will use when your idle.

So at what point do you utilize the Team number?

First install the program and choose a name for yourself (like your nickname here). When the program starts up, it'll ask for your team number. It's initially 0, so just change it to 79419.

Can we get a team badge on our profile page or something for signing up?Like a little red star next to our name when we post would be cool! I'm going to sign up anyways, but it would be fun and could convince more people to sign up with the magic of peer pressure and the fear of being an "outsider".

Well.. I read the wiki page and researched the site a bit.. It's amazing that the record for it is over one PFLOPS.. Who thought up the name team "darkness" by the way? Though it really isn't much for a single person to do it, since it runs in the background and won't interrupt anything, I guess I'll paticipate. I can't believe that it's been going on for about 7 years and I've never heard anything about it. Then again, I guess it isn't that popular. Anyways, sounds like fun.

vinceasuma, you got a star icon? Manick's thinking about it, but since he sucks at graphics, he needs the picture first! (Just point and laugh at him~)

Also, anyone got a logo for the team?
