So I don't know how to explain the game. It's not very popular where I lived, but I played it once, and was like "awesome... sheep wars!" If you haven't played it, you wouldn't know what I was talking about.

Anyone played it? Any awesome strategies?

I've played it a couple times. Quite fun, but I haven't really played it enough to have a grasp of any great strategies.

NightSwan also said that she wanted to peg me, once, but I'm not sure whether to take that as a compliment or a threat...

I have the game including the Knights and Castles expansion pack. A real good worthwhile game that is great if ya wanna get people introduced to other board games other then the mainstream ones like monopoly and risk. 😀

"I'll do anything for some wood." Heh.

I only know two people who own this game, but man is it ever fun. I really need to find myself a copy and pick it up soon.

It's the best game ever! 😀

There is also a PC version you can use to make practice (MSN games).

It's a pity that here it's not so popular and I've just a couple of friends interested in games like that, so I actually never tried the expansions (even if I read the rules and I practically know how to play, lol).

There are a lot of strategies for the game, it depends very much on how the map is.
If you can kinda of monopolize a resource is good, but really hard. Best thing to monopolize are wood and brick. Sheep are the worst one.
The best thing you can find is a port with a 2:1 for a resource which is also in the same territory, and better if it's a 6-8 or at least 5 and 9. In that case you can put there your second colony or put one colony near and build there the third one as first thing in the game. People tend to underestimate the importance of the ports.
I often start with building a third colony on a port and then try to upgrade my best colony to city.
If you use a similar strategy is better to concentrate your colony on crossroads where you can get wood and bricks or wheat and coals. In the first case you'll try to win taking the longest roads and build up many colonies, in the second one you'll try to upgrade your colony, make some points with progress card, with the largest army.

If you have trouble to choose what places for colony pick up at the start, remember to count how much you need to sum or subtract to make a 7 and sum of all the numbers. The lesser are better. Example:
On a crossroad with 6-3-11 you have
7-6= 1
7-3= 4
11-7= 4
Total 9.
On a crossroad with 5-9-11 you have
7-5= 2
9-7= 2
11-7= 4
Total 8.
On a port with a 3:1 you have 6-5
7-6= 1
7-5= 2
7-0= 7 (cause you have to count also that ^^)
Total 10.
The second one is statically better. The third one has a port, so maybe it could be also better if you can make a good use of the port even if you can pick only two resource from there. The first one could be the worst choice, but many beginners will be probably attracted by the 6 and take that.
Of course it also depends on which resource there are, so the quantity is not always a better choice than quality.

Remember also that to take a 6-8 is good, but a combo of 5-9 could be better because other players tend to put the robber only on 6 and 8, so if you can take with a colony a square with a 5-9 and another number you could be almost sure that it'll be always effective even if you use a strategy with doesn't involve a lot of knights to move away the robber.
Also if you can don't take two 6 or 8. A 6-8 is good, because luck has as always a decent part in the game. So if you rarely got a 6 or 8 and your strategy is build up on getting one of these number, you're doomed. This could seems a stupid advice, because 6 and 8 has 1/6 possibility to come up, but to me it's the most important advice you could give in the game because maths is an opinion! 😀 .

These are my basic tips, but as always you should just adjust your way to play to many factors. ^^
