well i didnt know where to put this..

well i finally got adsl and a wireless modem that has LAN.. well i connected right, and the wifi connenctions says 54 mbps, and the LAN is 100 mbps when i connect.. well when i connect using any of the two connections they are going slower than my dial-up which is 52 kbps.. and it says they are going 54 mbps (wifi) and 100 mbps (LAN)

well my question is do you guys know why its going sooo slow.. or is it just that it takes a while to get fast?

well you probably know but
kbps=kilo bites per sec
mbps=megabytes per sec

1000 kilo= 1 megabyte..

and 54 megabytes is 54,000 kilobytes and 100 megabytes is 100,000 kilobytes per sec and its going way to slow could you help me?

and when i mean slow it goes slower than my dial up. and my downloads go at from .5 kilobytes to 2.5 kilobytes a sec on the wifi and LAN.. and on the dial up i usually get 5-6 kilobytes per second on download

it takes me usually 20-30 secs on dial up to load up mangaupdates.. and takes around 50-70 secs to load up mangaupdates with my new adsl wifi, LAN connection 🙁

but one of the weird things is.. FEAR a computer game that needs a powerful computer to play.. when i run it and play online i go faster than my dial up when i use wifi or LAN.. i have no idea why.. 😕

As far as your speed issue though... that's really weird. Just out of curiousity, what is your adsl rated at? For instance, is it 384kbps download, 128kbps upload etc?

I had dialup for about half a year and this site NEVER loaded up that slowly...

i clear my cookies all the time.. and all the information after i get off.. so the pages have to reload everything.. if i left it on their it would go probably 5-10 secs.. but i like clear cookies 😀

Ah, so you clear your cache. Well as far as the speed that I was wondering about, I was wondering what your rated speed was. For instance, when you bought your service, you had to pay for a certain speed. Usually if you pay more you get faster connections. I'm just wondering exactly how fast your rated speed is. Did that clear it up at all?

well.. its an italian adsl company that does american and italian customers.. a few of my friends use it..

and we payed 99 euro for the service.. i think thats arund 124 american dollars.. i duno the exchange rate..

Also when you say 54Mbps it's not 54 MegaBytes per second but rather 54 Megabits per second.

To find the actual speed you divide by 8. For example a 56Kilobits line (i.e. normal modem) has a maximum download of 7kilobytes per second.

From the site that you gave us, Alice Flat is a 2Mbit per second connection. So it shouldn't matter if you connect using a LAN cable since the maximum it can receive is just 2Mbit and the maximum speed you'll be able to download will be around 300 Kilobytes per second.

About the 100Mbit connection,

There is one. But it's mostly used in universities. My university is currently on a 10Mbit connection but is planning to upgrade to 100Mbit in the next few years.

Also if you connect two pcs together using an ethernet cable then the theoretical speed between the two is 100Mbits. Again all these is theoretical and depends on a lot of factors.

Well, sure. Inside my provider company's inner network we all (the users) connect to each other at 100 mbits/s. For example, some dude is downloading FFVII: Advent Children from my FTP right now at around eleven megabytes per second.

Anyway, such a connection can easily exist, but I don't think that any provider can give you a 100mbps internet connection yet.

as you said that it doesnt matter on 54 mbps it will only be 2 mbps as it said on alice flat..

so does that mean if i move my laptop using wifi connection.. and move a few rooms from my wifi connection.. and the connection says 35 mbps.. will it still run the same as it was 54mbps or it will run slower?

54 mbps is the max..

It depends on the signal strength. If the signal is stron then you can assume that it will be at maximum speed (i.e. 2Mbits). If it's not then the speed will drop.

Although I know quite a bit about physical connections, I'm not that good with wireless. Maybe someone else will know for sure.

we have one here. offering the whole package for around 100+ Eur per month...
but you need specific cables and we don't have them where i live 🙁

it's the fastest line to get for normal users in germany right now. but as i said, very limited access because the needed wires are not available in too many cities...
