I personally don't find it petty. It's making a statement: You can't use someone's likeness without their permission.
I don't know how many of you are old enough to remember the face that used to be on Taster's Choice coffee canisters. They used his likeness without permission, and he won big in a court case, though appeals are still going through (and personally, I hope he wins). http://www.talkaboutcoffee.com/the-face-of-tasters-choice-didnt-know.html if you want to read the basics of the story.
The difference in the stories: The Taster's Choice guy was a model with a contract. Jordan is a well known sports figure, AND they did it without having any sort of contract or attempt at receiving consent.
Jordan is letting them off LIGHT at only $5M per store. It's enough to get their attention and probably not serious harm to the business (and if it is, they should've known better, tbh).
It's not petty at all, and the idiot who wrote the story has no concept of what it is to be such a well-known personage whose likeness could be seriously misused and damaged. (Jordan would get a LOT more if that happened.)
If you've ever thought or said "Nice Guys finish last" and really meant it, then you should probably read this LJ post by DivaLion. It's incredibly insightful whether you're male or female.

Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha! My family and I were just talking about what great role models athletes are.
I mean, I can kind of see his point but at the same time...he's just making himself look ridiculous by making such a big, public deal out of it. Both companies paid for full-page ads that congradulated him; why shouldn't they be allowed to stick their compaies slogan or a small coupon in there? I wasn't able to find photos of the ads in question, but the descriptions I read about them made them sound rather harmless. Does he really need to go so far as to sue them in such a public manner?
And I guess that's what gets me. Not that he's upset about it, but that he's making it such a public matter.
I am a breath of insanity in a world of chaos.
