Heavily Modded Games.

I've just finished a year long rut of playing a heavily modified version of Elder Scrolls Oblivion and though it was pretty awesome, I've played it to death. 🤢
Anyone have any experience with other games with a healthy mod following worth looking into? I'm thinking of trying Fallout or New Vegas but I also hear a lot of good things about half life and half life 2.

I would recommend neverwinter nights 2 or even dragon age (not 2 though, that one is really bad) Though they are not first person and more tactical.
And even though fallout can be modded in my opinion borderlands is better.

Stalker: shadow of chernobyl is pretty much expected to be played modded.
The Sims series, though probably not what you're looking for, also has far too many mods.
Fallout 3 and New Vegas' modding scene is very similar to Oblivions, and you'll probably have a similar experience if you go that route.
Half life and Half life 2 aren't really known so much for their mods... Well, the most notable mods generally change the entire game, so there are mods of note, just not in the sense of Oblivion, as you're basically playing a different game afterwards. However, if you haven't played Half life 2, it's quite excellent.

I second Neverwinter Nights 2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series

Neverwinter Nights 2 looks promising. Stopped playing pen and paper after everyone got into MMOs and I haven't played a D&D video game since Baldur's Gate. Even without mods, it would be nice to screw around with 3.5 again. That and the fact they removed the DRM is encouraging. Any game with activation limits or the constant need for an internet connection is off my list.
I actually only played Portal 2 so I might finally give the Half Life series a go. For that matter, are the original games and sequels still worth playing at this point or are they just dated, more of the same and/or worse?

They're very dated. If you want an idea, Freeman's Mind is an enjoyable "let's play" that should show you just what you're missing.

There are plenty of good mods for Dwarf Fortress out there. Um, but, maybe you didn't mean that kind of game. Minecraft? Okay I'll admit, this isn't my specialty area. Just wanted to throw those out there.
