The egg.
Or at least an egg-like means of reproduction would have existed (long) before the chicken.
The chickens ancestors (dinosaurs) reproduced this way.
Incidentally, it was discovered recently that T. Rex's closest modern descendant is the chicken.
Make of that what you will.
