Spriggan - character question

I'm working my way through Spriggan in Japanese and have just about finished the 2nd volume of the 11 book set.
The French Spriggan - Jan Jacquemond (or whatever, it's ambiguous katakana) - is this a girl or a guy? I assumed girl from the outset because of the gender neutral name, long hair, and tendency to assume feminine poses in the artwork, but...
Wikipedia has this character listed as male.
Looking back over it I guess it could go either way, unless further on in the series it's resolved definitely.
Can anyone verify the gender here?
