Hi,

This is my first time buying a USB drive and I am wondering which brand would be better. The choices I have are Sandisk Cruzer 8 GB USB Drive and Dane-Elec 8 GB USB Drive.

Things I am looking for are:

Speed
Reliabitily
Compatibility with many different OS' (particularly Windows XP, Vista and Macs).

Please answer ONLY if you have used said products.

Thank you.

You should get a USB that is retractable! It's too easy to break the other ones.

i have serveral usb drive (flash drive/thumb drive) or whatever you like to call it, it all the same thing, anyway back to your question: in term of "brand" name or not, it does not matter cuz they work the same (usb 2.0) [Maybe its does matter for ppl who care about brand name]. if you unsure about an unbrand name item, look it up online and read the comment on it by ppl who bought and use it.

Speed: most usb speed are the same (all current usb is label as 2.0)
Reliabitily: depend on you (if you like the look, size(shape),design, and "will you lose it? question")
Compatibility: most usb will work on any window os, not sure on mac since i don't own one

After you take away the above question, it come down 2 question on you: how much it cost? and what size (GB) do you want in?

If it was me, i buy the cheaper one becasue they all work the same. Just to note: brand name is often more (higer price) then non-branded one.

here all the usb drive i own (with out telling how much(MB or GB they are):
Sandisk Cruzer
kingston
Pny

Um... I already said I was looking for a 8 GB in my OP. And both USB are the same price, which is why I'm asking.
The reason I'm not sure about getting which one is because I have already seen too many mixed reviews regarding their speed, reliability and compatibility that I no long have any idea which is better anymore.

But thank you for replying anyway. 🙂

I've never heard of the second option, but I've never had a problem with my 4GB Cruzer.

if you have another choice then i would recommend The Patriot Xporter 8gb.

"The Xporter XT flash drive is so fast, you're sure to do a double take! This 8GB drive gives you 200X read speed and driverless support for Windows ME and better, Mac OS 9+, and Linux with USB storage support. The rubberized housing offers water- and shock-resistant protection, so your data stays safe, even in the worst conditions."

If it's between the two given i'd say go with the cruzer

Well if both is around the same price and the same storage size and u r confuse with mix review for good and bad then the only thing u should do is choose the best one that best fit your " design" taste. like color of it, shape of it, how it plug in. stuff like that, go with your gut, that what i do if 2 thing about the same i go with the more popular one, ask the ppl here to vote for one and you choose the one that ppl most mention. go with your gut, if its didn't work out , just return for refund

the reason Sandisk usb drives are so inexpensive is beacause they're poorly made. Atleast the retractable ones are. I had an old sandisk cruzer mini that lasted me almost three years before it died, and that thing went through the wash a couple times and was thrown all over the place and stepped on a few times. But the newer retractable ones break. Easily. Even if you do take care of it. A friend of mine has bought several because they broke. He keeps buying them because they are inexpensive. I mean $30 (last year) for a 16GB flash drive. You can't beat that price.

Personally though, I don't have a preference brandwise, so long as it isn't retractable.

The Sony 8GB retractables aren't half bad though...

Personally, I prefer anything by Transcend - you just gotta love lifetime warranties.

Don't know about the Dan-Elec, but the Sandisk Cruzer should have something they call U3, which is that a part of the total space of the stick is converted into a different format which is recognized as an optical drive, such as cd/dvd, this enables auto-starting things as you would from a cd/dvd and opens up compatibility questions between operative systems. Personally I killed off that partition off of my Cruzer to get use of the full 8gb, not an entirely obvious procedure, but doesn't require 3rd party tools.

So far the experiences I've had regarding reliability with usb sticks in general is that they're all the same, I still have a nameless 128mb stick from years ago which I stripped the outer shell off and duct taped around it to protect it, and it still works.

Same with speed, they work by USB, and USB is a standard currently in version 2.0 and 3.0 coming soon. You'll still sometimes get 1.1 or 1.0 in older computers, which means slower transfer rates, but that can't be fixed with any USB stick, only a hardware upgrade on the computer will help.

These kind of questions should be asked here. 😉

I hope you got enough input from this thread. Any
further questions you have, ask them there~♥
