New Poll - Choosing Series

We have a new poll for the week! Unfortunately, the long words kinda broke up the site formatting...but who cares? (Edit: Thanks Manick, for fixing the problem~) This time, we're wondering exactly how you guys choose to read a new series. The poll was submitted by MajorMarmot. If anyone wants to submit their own poll question, here is the place to go: http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903
Now for the previous poll:
Question: Who knows you read manga?
Choices:
Everyone - votes: 1917 (31.1%)
All of my friends - votes: 1494 (24.3%)
Only a few of my closest friends - votes: 1644 (26.7%)
Only the people I know online - votes: 291 (4.7%)
Only my family - votes: 390 (6.3%)
No one (I don't tell anyone) - votes: 422 (6.9%)
There were 6158 total votes.
The poll ended: March 15th 2008
A fairly even split. Not too many people are keeping it totally secret due to embarrassment. Don't forget guys, if you spread the word of anime/manga, then its popularity will spread~

It really depends.
I'll read anything MangaScreener or Kotonoha releases, regardless of gender. Because I know they scanlate quality series. There are also series I will never even bother touching because of the group scanlating it. Think JanimeS, Mahou-X, Franky-House.
If I read a certain manga and like the mangaka's style, or author/artist's style, I might look up more mangas from that person.
There's no particular magazine I avoid, but there are a few magazines that have more good stuff than others (Big Comic Spirits, Ikki, Young Magazine, Ultra Jump, Young Gangan, Magazine Z, Young Animal).
Associated manga/related media & popularity is mostly irrelevant to me.
Recommendations work, but the person would have to convince me.
Genre, only if it's something specific.

I joined Mangascreener back in 2006 because they did 90% of the manga I liked. Aside from our own output, I sometimes take a gamble and read something else. Mostly those are from a magazine I like (Ikki, Spirits, Afternoon, etc), scanlated by a qualitative group, or by a mangaka I like.

You should add whether a manga is completely scanlated because that's how I choose and probably some others. This is because I hate waiting for the next chapter.

I have to admit with silent that I picked a lot of manga (my Wish List is stuck at about the 1000th title but I think the system still records what I add so I have about 2000 titles that I would consider reading. I've been picker lately, and if I really want to read something but it's not done but being scanslated, I put it on my Reading List). I sort of wonder how I would split the 1000 prospective titles even in that feature that Manick mentioned about making our own lists came into place, well, beyond maybe "shounen" and "shoujo" of my own interests.

Really? I think the public library does a better job than I. But I guess if I became a promoter, then I would have to find people that I would want to have as friends. I'm too shy otherwise and admittedly I'm too worried about being lumped into that otaku group, and I mean the people that dream, sleep, eat manga and anime. I'm an escapist, but I don't spent 24/7 imagining my life in anime and manga world. My reading fictional books could be considered the same but it's not as far as I'm concerned because even when I finish a story, I don't automatically leave that world because I'm thinking through the story. Would that be living in a fantasy world if I only rethink the scenarios when I'm doing it in my free time? Or maybe that it only interferes with my work occasionally? Anyhow, I just ended up saying that.
Also, about a year ago when I was at a Chapters and I asked where the manga section was (it got moved), the sales person I asked ended up talking about it and when he sells stuff he promotes people towards it as I remember understanding from the conversation. 🙂 (I don't consider him one of the "scary otaku" like I mentioned above for the 5 minutes I talked with him.)

It's a shame there's no option for deciding based on summaries. That's a big factor for me.

i go by summaries and the cover picture, and then the ratings/reviews.

Same for me. ..but first I have to find out about the manga somehow. typically, I find manga through all of the poll options listed. >_< ahhh.. it's so difficult to vote.

I can think of at least one series that has been scanned by both a group on your "will read" list and one on your "won't read" list. I won't tell you which because I don't want to shatter your fragile sense of reality.

I always check the synopsis first. After that, it's a combination. If it interests me, I check genre, rating, and reviews (I'm picky because it's a waste of time and money to get something I end up disliking). If my interest is piqued, I'll pick it up. I occasionally look for manga based on other things such as author or group.

Um... Yeah...
From what you're trying to say (With English like yours, I'm not sure at all what you're saying) is that of one of those horrible groups I mentioned, I have a series on my Wish List that they're doing? Lemme guess, HxH? The only problem is, FH isn't the only group doing it. If I do read that series, I will download NewGear's version.
Let's take another series that only FH/Mahou/Jan do. Say, Kekkaishi, Ashita no Yoichi]or Princess. I will never even bother thinking of downloading their releases of this series seeing as they're the only scanlators working on the series.
Yeah, FH does do Naruto & Bleach & One Piece. I know. I definitely won't download their version, though. I'll wait for JapFlap, Max7 (Which I QC, btw) & Null to release for my reading enjoyment.
