I was talking to my friend today who is asian and it seems like her parents want her to have eyelid surgery and at first I had no clue what that was but after she told me I understood .She wants to have it so she can look pretty and that's why her parents want her to have it but she's scard it might hurt.

Idunno it kinda upsets me that she thinks she'll be pretty once she gets it done. What do you guy think about it? Maybee I'm overreacting.

Just so you know, not ALL asian parents are like that.
In fact most asian parents just want their kids to do well in the world academically. Not looks. I don't that's just wrong. I hope you lead your friend to the right decision.

Sorry I didn't mean to be stereotypical! She just said that she knows alot of people that had it done and I will try to convince her not to cause I think she's pretty the way she is. I was just making sure that I wasn't in the wrong

Not every asian girl goes out and gets double eyelid surgery. 😐
And uh, most of the time, it's not the parents that force it...

If she doesn't want to get it, she should say so to her parents. She should be able to make her own decisions.
But if she does want it, it's her choice.

i'm pretty sure that i'm asian living in asia and pretty sure that this case is just "one of those" parent case

One thing I'm wondering: do most people outside Asia think that "asian" equals chinese/korean/japanese? Cause there are others you know, Indian, Southeast asian, arab, etc. And since east asian are the only ones with single eyelid they're the only ones who'd do the surgery, other asians don't need to.
About the double eyelid surgery, well I lived in Korea about two years ago and it seemed that double eyelid surgery was a common thing there. You could even do it in a beauty salon, no need to go the doctor. And it's not just the girls, many boys/men also had it. Though usually it's not forced by the parents since they wanted it themselves due to the "beauty image" most koreans (at least the ones I knew) had.

PS: Sorry for the nitpicking, but it really gets on my nerves when people say asian when they only mean one specific group.

I'm South Indian and typically indian,pakistan and banglesh and those type of asians have it hard as in parents wanting them to become doctors or generally do well in studies and the stress of having an arranged marriage, but I knw tht double eyelid surgery is defo not a problem for us

That's really, really sad... What is this, a bad case of the white man supremacy gone wrong? I don't even understand how you can become prettier by removing the eyelids so typical of E Asian people. Are they going to start w/ boob implants and all of that other unnecessary, dangerous, and morally irreparable things (although I'm sure they already started). What I find most disgusting is the media that constantly influences people, women mostly, that to be beautiful you must change yourself with either make up or surgery. That is just plain WRONG. It's wrong because your friend is your friend, and she's perfect just the way she is. Secondly, has she asked guys whether she's more beautiful with the surgery? Because not all guys will say yes. It's a misconception of beauty brought by screwed up social standards which are screwed up because of the media. What you're shown as beauty on TV isn't necessarily what guys think is beautiful...

Well I'm actually indian and I don't say i'm asian cause when I do people think i'm in that chinese/korean/japanese group so I just say indian. But I thought indians are refered to as south asian. And that sucks that it's the beauty image there!

Hmm maybe we have it harder? Well actually my parents don't really enforce those things on me cause I don't live there but I see my cousins and it's quite sad.

It's probably common in some part of Asia, but truthfully I don't know many people getting eyelid surgery in China unless they're very rich. Many wouldn't need them in any case.

It's not just the eyelids getting some makeover. My Korean friend told me about her friend who had a jaw reduction surgery. Right after she had that surgery, her matchmaking were successful and she got married. The thing is, when she had a baby, the baby had her original jaw, the exact same jaw..

I couldn't agree more. Here in Indonesia we're obsessed with fair skin and long straight hair. There are stories of girls who went to a quack for some skin lightening regime and got injected with harmful substances instead. With skin lightening lotion ads everywhere on tv and mags ever since they were kids, you can't really blame these girls. Would have helped if the media hadn't been dictating on what beauty is.

See, I think that's really strange, thinking about it. Over here we have skin-darkening lotions and tanning beds (and lots of stories about people getting cancer from using them). I guess the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

As for the eyelid surgery, I don't think it's that weird. It's probably akin to someone over here getting liposuction, or their boobs done. It depends, though. How old is your friend? If she's under 25 or so, I think that's really wrong, but if she's over that, changing your appearance is fairly common, and I don't see anything wrong with it.

Asians have it hard? lol look at most latin america countries where Big arses girls are "pretty" and those somehow fat girls are seen "Mamasota" ... We do have it hard trying to get normal girls.

I would actually say that it's not limited to just Asian women, in general females across the planet are brainwashed (sorry, couldn't think of a better word) into thinking they must fix their "imperfections." In western society, most women are attacked daily by a social propaganda telling them that thin, tan, and plastic is what they need to look like to be beautiful.

Sorry, my sister is here and I have been subjected to shows like One Tree Hill, The Hills, and Gossip Girl. Someone put me out of my misery.

I would understand if she had eye problems. But this is beyond me.
Did her parents (or any of her relatives) perform the same thing for their eyes?
