So i read this almost loong long time ago and can't remember the title of it.
The protagonist is a red fox and in their social system Red fox is the lowest so he got bullied a lot but then his friend a black? fox who has the highes social status protected him from the bullies.
Then the story goes when they got assigned as the shrine's fox spirits the black fox kept harrassing the red one saying that he likes him and so on but in the end the love is mutual. ^^

this seems to be what you are looking for Ayashi no Kimi no Koiwazurai. But it's a white fox instead of a black fox, but I'm pretty sure this is it. ^^
