This week's poll was suggested by Joese. How do you think the world would turn out if suddenly everyone got superpowers? So not just a select few, but everyone.
You can submit poll ideas here

Oddly enough, not a popular poll despite how easy it is to answer

Instant chaos, but eventually plateauing to the point that everything would stay about the same.

It would get worse. Not all powers are created equal. There would definitely be some people that would use their powers to hurt others.
The world can´t stay the same due to immediately changing so worse it is and all major comics universe are deadlier than ours so it's not like genre writers disagree. Some as Marvelman reach a utopian state down the line but it's debatable how nice to live in that world truly is.
I also read EU/US comics and am a librarian.

Depends on the type of personality and power, I assume we all seen or played DC Comics Injustice.

Kind of depends on the level of superpowers... If everyone turned into the equivalent of Superman it would be total chaos. Just look at what happened to Metropolis in Man of Steel, and that was two superpowered guys... 7 billion of them... Guess the world would blow up in like a minute or so.
But if it's on the level of heating up water for bathing, charging your phone or bending spoons... Wouldn't make much of a difference...
~4400 manga completed
~1700 ongoing...

It would've eventually "stayed the same" (as in, the duality of humans will never change), but it would've also been destroyed long before that, partially because of the absolute chaos, and partially because even after that - only in comics would the good guys win **** every time**** someone wanted to destroy the world.

I went against the flow and picked "The world would get better".
In terms of difference in abilities, humans are already not equal as they are. When we also put artificial powers into play (like money, or societal status), then the differences increase.
Looking at it this way, it's not like superpower would create that much of an unbalance, compared to what already happens in the real world. The moment they get normalized, they wouldn't be "super" anymore.
However, people being able to do more stuff than what we currently can would probably translate in a slightly easier day-to-day life for most people.
Of course, if we put this thought to the extreme and give someone the superpower of creating nukes, then we would go towards apocalypse pretty fast. So, for this question to work, we have to first imagine that nobody would get any power that could easily bring about the end of the world.
My current top 3:
Fullmetal Alchemist
Pandora Hearts

Instantly worst. Any sudden change without precedent has only worsen present day inequalities and stereotypes. Even if all the abilities were on the level of bending spoons and forks, some how society would rank and associate it with something else to keep the hierarchy.

Easy. Half of humanity would kill themselves by accident, the other half would kill each other because of differing opinions. So with humanity completely extinct, the world would be a better place.

I actually like this take, but I didn't read it before voting The world would get worse.
Personally I think boku no hero academia gets it right (with the backstory).

Well maybe not at the beginning but eventually:
The world would become a huge mess and the survival of fittest would be the only rule. Because other rules would be constantly changing along with the balance of power and the rulers of course.
If the powers would be hereditary than it would only lead discrimination and outright slavery.
If they would be given random, than the first ones to stand at top would regulate the human rights. And what a surprise, being strong is no more cool.
I think we are created this weak and fragile for a reason.
Unless the superpower is identical from person to person and not too overpower (i.e flying super power) it will definitely end in utter chaos mmm...
I will change this world mmm...
So the world can change me mmm...

Saike's answer to this was that children wouldn't be able to handle these powers and it would inevitably lead to destruction. Keeping balance in a world where people have powers to commit crimes is hard enough but even disregarding villains who use their powers for evil, children lack the mental development needed to control their powers responsibly. They would cause destruction not even through evil but just carelessness.
That's at least what the manga taught anyway and I appreciate it but when it comes to if it would make the world better or worse, it depends a lot on values. The world would certainly be much more chaotic, which for most people would be worse, which probably includes many of you. The only people who would actually like it better are those bored with the mundane real world like me and that's why I voted that the world would get better, just my opinion. Both order and chaos are very valid values.

Oh so much worse. Hereditary can already give people advantages and disadvantages in terms of health or privileges. Can you image the class system and hierarchy that would be more overt when looking into superpowers. Not to mention depending on what country you come from your powers can be used to oppress others or "future colonies".
