My tastes have change since 5 yrs or so ago when I read lot more shoujo than I do now and the only ones I actually keep up with are Skip Beat! and Kanojo wa Uso o Aishisugiteru as I don't really count Chang Ge Xing, Natsume Yuujinchou,or Oooku as shoujo.

Anyway, I want to read a newish shoujo that has romance, but it cannot be set in high school. I definitely enjoy historical settings, but I don't want to read something like Yume no Shizuku, Ougon no Torikago or anything of Hwang Mi-Ri's. I also really enjoy fantasy, but I don't want to read Saver and I have a lot of shoujo manga in this genre in my hold list which I will get back to one day. I also enjoy supernatural as long as it's Japanese supernatural (I also have a few of these on my hold list) and not Western, no vampires unless they're like the vampires from Hellsing or something.

Yeah, you can see that I've definitely moved away from shoujo, I like Yukarism and I mention that because that is basically the newest shoujo that I really enjoyed and that came out in 2010. So yeah this going to be tough, I'm really picky with shoujo now. If you want to check things I've already read or my tastes in shoujo or something all my lists are public.

Akatsuki no Yona is pretty popular right now, but I haven't read it so I don't have an opinion of it.

I second this. I think it's very much what you're looking for and I have read it and really love it.

You have read a lot of Shoujo, so I'm sorry if any of these are already on your lists and I missed it. You are also welcome to look at my lists. I enjoy historical Shoujo as well and have read many of the same ones as you.

To Read List:

Akatsuki no Yona - This is a light read so far. It hasn't had very much romance. but it has some great characters and has a lot of potential. (Edit: While I was typing this out others mentioned this one, so I third it).

Gu Fang Bu Zi Shang - If you like Chang Ge Xing I can almost guarantee you will like this one. The down side is that it is on hiatus. It is made from the light novel Gu Fang Bu Zi Shang (Novel), so you can read more of the story if you are alright with those.

Saver - I know you said you didn't want this one, but its one of my favorites. The first four chapters are completely different then the rest of the story and only provide background(also the scan quality is not that great at the start). I almost dropped it myself. I promise that it is much better once she travels to the past.

On Hold List:
Scarlet Palace - You must have decided against this one, but I have really enjoyed it. Maybe give it a second look?

Not on your Lists:

Shinobi yoru Koi wa Kusemono - Not a historical story, but its focused on ninja. I love the fact that the ninja bodyguard is the female.

Koukyuu Days - Shichi Kuni Monogatari - This is a lighter read that doesn't have a strong focus on romance yet. Again it has a strong female lead that can fight and take care of herself.

Ookami Heika no Hanayome - Another lighter read. This one has more romance, but the girl is naive and oblivious. The wolf king is a great character though.

I'm not sure I can do Akatsuki no Yona to be honest. I've seen the first ep and part of the second and was totally rooting for Soo-Woon even after he killed her father and took the throne. She did not deserve to be Empress and her journey back to the throne just seems pitiful. I don't see how she has any qualities that would make people be loyal to her outside of her blood.

Manga like Chang Ge Xing and Arslan Senki have similar concepts, but I enjoy them because I can root for the main character; I like Chang Ge's intelligence and Arslan's compassion. Yona doesn't seem to have any redeeming qualities to me

I probably have Gu Fang Bu Zi Shang on my To Read list because it's on hiatus and I don't want to start it until it's not hiatus anymore. I'm not sure I want to read the light novel because when I read translated novels the ones I read have been translated professionally. To me novels are a little too close to poetry when translating, it's much more difficult to get right especially when not working with the author.

I dropped Saver after reading the first few chapters years ago and it's only on the To Read list because so many people have enjoyed it. I'm not sure I'm up to reading it yet though.

I stopped reading Scarlet Palace because the main character annoyed me and it seemed to cliched. Probably not going to give it a second look.

The School Life genre tag for Shinobi yoru Koi wa Kusemono is slightly putting me off, so I'll probably check this one out last.

Koukyuu Days - Shichi Kuni Monogatari looks awesome and I'm definitely checking this out.

The reviews for Ookami Heika no Hanayome says it's like [m]Saiunkoku no Monogatari[/m] and I really like Saiunkoku so I will most likely check it out.

Thanks everyone.

Okobore hime to entaku no kishi
Kanata Kara
Hotarubi no Mori e

Let me tell you a little more about the Akatsuki no Yona story. Sometimes its difficult to get a full picture from the first chapters. These are spoilers though.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Thought she does gain some supporters simply because of her position, most of the story (to this point) has been her realizing her weaknesses and trying to change. She meets the regular citizens and sees that her father was not a good ruler. This makes her face what it means to take on the responsibility of being a leader. Also the story does not paint Soo-Woon into the position of "bad guy." Instead it shows him to be a wise ruler. Yona doesn't blindly hate him either and even admits that she still cares for him. I have found the characters to be far more complex then the original impression. Even though she started out with the idea of revenge, in the current chapter she will even be defending Soo-Woon from an outside enemy.

Last Game and Akagami no Shirayukihime are both on my hold list. Last Game because I enjoyed the one shot and felt that it maybe should have ended there but was willing to look at later. Akagami because it felt like it was getting a bit redundant, especially the relationship seeming to go nowhere and no character development to offset that.

Okobore hime to entaku no kishi looks interesting I'll check it out.

I've read the first volume of Kanata Kara and didn't really enjoy the main character and though the art was only okay so I won't check it out right now.

I love all the works by the mangaka of Hotarubi no Mori e and I've read all the ones that have been scanlated.

Reimei no Arcana and Siesta are on my hold list and I probably won't be reading them for a while yet. Though maybe sooner than later for Reimei since it's now complete.

Shounen Oujo looks awesome and sounds awesome and so does Liselotte to Majo no Mori. Momochi-san Chi no Ayakashi Ouji looks really pretty. Song of the Doll on the other hand seems a bit too creepy for me right now.

As for Akatsuki no Yona it now just seems like a lesser version of Chang Ge Xing and if it goes in a similar route I'd prefer more politics and strategy to adventure.

Himegimi no Jouken definitely comment this.

Don't be so quick to write off Akatsuki no Yona. A lot of people dropped it due to the beginning and miss out on the development the story and Yona as a character goes through. Though yeah it's mostly adventure.

The politics is mostly on Soo-Woon's side.
