People who wants donation for running their websites/buying raws/scanlating are trash. Why? Because they make scanlation a business by doing this.

How do you think charity organizations are being run? The goal is not to make profit, but at least financially compensate their employees. Scanlation is the same. I wouldn't be able to afford to work 5+ hours every day on scanlation if I wasn't at least getting a bit of money to help pay my bills in return. That's only fair. We provide a service after all, whether it's legal or not.

lambchopsil approved of it for the following reason:

Quote from lambchopsil

We are allowing MangaLator as a group as they have the translations and the images all on the same page and it's easily available for anyone to read. It's a step below an actual scanlation, but we're still permitting it

Besides, scanlation is illegal anyway. The existence of more isn't going to make it any less illegal.

Off-topic: You're the best example 🙂

I love you too 😉

Wait, so MangaLator is listed as a "Group" on Mangaupdates? Because if it is not, then I don't see how we can filter it out. But I don't personally feel it should be allowed, since it's far from a "Group" philosophy. But then again I think the same of Crunchyroll.

The definition of a "scanlation group" is debatable. If you go to the Scanlators link on the side, it will say the following for what MangaUpdates believes a "scanlator" is:

A scanlator is a person or group of people who work collaboratively to scan and then translate manga so that fans all around the world can enjoy them.

Arguably, you could say that MangaLator "scans" the raws, and then the freelances are the people "collaborating" and translating it "so that fans all around the world can enjoy them."

On a side note, Crunchyroll is a publisher, not a scanlator.

"Arguably" is the right word. I know what Crunchyroll is, and it is still listed on this site as a group nonetheless.

Seriously?
You're doing it wrong.
Scanlation is supposed to be a hobby, not a chance to make some quick money, not even some pocket money.

Sadly enough, the community has degenerated so far that it has become natural to pay hundred of dollars for garbage that was "translated" by machines or hundred of dollars per month to host a fucking simple website.
Buying raws from the donations is one thing, but groups ask for donation each month and such a high amount that they could never spent all that money on raws.
It's a fucking business.
Nobody cares about the original goal of scanlators anymore.
Scanlators want to make a profit.
Leecher want faster and easier accessible releases for free.

Scanlation has died.

Allowing Crunchyroll to make releases on MU was a conscious effort to try and convince readers to go to their site to read official releases instead of unofficial ones. But MU isn't ruling out unofficial releases, though.

LOL

If you can say stuff like that with a straight face it's obvious you don't have any financial problems in your life. Not everyone has a mommy or daddy to support them or got a well-paying job with lots of free time.

I scanlate because I like manga, not because of money. But if I didn't get any I wouldn't be able to afford spending my time on scanlation. That's reality.

Poor soul. I bet you're the only person on earth, who has ever faced hardships. You have my condolences, really.

Maybe you ought to get a job then instead of spending time on scanlation?

Hey, I'm not the one whining about scanlation being "dead" because of people like me here. Boo hoo.

And how exactly would that benefit my readers? If I quit they won't be able to read the manga I do anymore, but hey, at least they won't get asked for voluntary donations either!

But yeah, I get it. You're just caring about the readers ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

This (pinned!) thread is a delight i must say. I will need to grab popcorn next time.
MU lists all sorts of (legal in this case) readers like Manga Box or Comic Walker as "Groups" besides Crunchyroll and scalations are theft anyway...
Enough groups also rip ML transations.

I will assume that the silent majority ether doesn´t care or will be happy to find out over time that all sorts of female publications as 7 Seeds are further along in translation or are only available on ML as of now and claiming a series is further against the MU rules.
The quality of the raws is also more than fine to me as i remember what the scene was like over a decade ago and i registered on ML for the translations anyway.
These can occasionally be a mess (incomplete ones are a blight) but i have read enough bad scanlations too. Feel happy to ignore the services and i will continue to report all sorts of releases and polish up the MU pages in the future. ML also regularly updates their series entries based on information from MU to round out their respectable service so my countless categories and genres get acknowledge on top. How nice and i set them with the utmost of professional care.
I lastly discovered countless of manga thanks to ML and spends more then a full week of my life on the site during the last year. Way to go ML community!
(I even had to change the way my reading list works till ML was approved).
lambchopsil and Sayori x3 did the right thing 😉 .
Happy continues bitching and freedom of information won this time yet again.
Edit: http://alexa.com/siteinfo/mangalator.ch Holy shit. The site get´s some series traffic.
Here is MU: http://alexa.com/siteinfo/mangaupdates.com

I didn't expect you to care about readers when you rip them off for money.

Bottom line is that MangaLators is a shitty name.
MangaLators isn't even original. It isn't even legal.
Another thing, since MangaLators doesn't have a goal, then the admin of that site should shut it down. I don't like using sites that don't have goals. It's a waste of everybody's time.

Oh look at us, we don't need people to be obligated to use us, but we still depend of ad revenue and we watermark our shitty raws so that people know that it was us that provided them. That way they can come back to our site when they need more. Also, they don't need to come back because we don't have a goal.

WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!
MangaLators is an abomination.
STUPID WORTHLESS SITE!

I have MangaHelpers, MangaUpdates, Google, Tons of original Japanese/Korean/Chinese comics Websites on those foreign "read free releases online" ....and it free and great quality scans and a tiny watermark that I can easily remove.

This is my opinion. That is all.
Carry on.

The administrator's selection of series is of his own preference. The series mostly focus on shoujo and/or romance manga, but you'll have the occasional non-shoujo series. And they're usually scanned from magazine raws that he purchases himself.

I suppose this is the main problem. The admin does whatever he wants and tlers sign up as peons to do the work for him so he can get his ad revenue or whatnot.

For this to work, it needs to be a community thing.

Besides, if it ever gets even close to popular, it'll get shut down immediately. Hosting manga raws is the purest form of piracy.

I'm 100% sure we aren't talking about charity organizations here but let's go the off-topic path. Yes, those who actually use only 5% of the money on the poor people while giving money to the high-end staffers are trash. We had a huge drama over here when it came out. Still those people you meet on the street, do not get any money cuz they are doing it for helping the poor. Anyway, true charity is done without getting anything in return. Like when you collect money, take a trip for your own money and then go help a village who are in need of money for medicin or school books or a house cuz a tsunami/earthquake came.

Back to topic:
Wait, what? No one is asking you to do 5+ hours every day on scanlation. You are doing it yourself! You cannot blame this one on anyone. Now asking for money to cover your bills because you don't go out and work, cannot be anyone's problem but your own. If you don't scanlate, someone else will. That's how it was 10 years ago and that's how it is today. What's fair isn't that you get a payment, its that you stop making scanlation a business when it's not. The service you provide should be free without any cost. Otherwise you are doing it wrong. 😉 (Or I've been doing it wrong for over a decade!)
