On one hand you have the discontinuing/hiatus, which is annoying, but I can sympathize with that because I know that there is stuff going on behind the scenes that we may not know about, like the author getting a Top Priority project, or health issues.

But what grinds my gear more than that is when the author drags on the series with little to no plot development for no beneficial reason. Like you wait patiently for the volume to come out, and there is literally nothing important to make the volume really worth it. And I understand the stories that may have one or two "slow" volumes, but if every. single. one of them is like that and it's clear that there was supposed to be a progression in the plot, that pisses me off. I guess that falls under the plot that makes no sense/plot holes...but really, that should be it's own option as well.

very obvious, at least the other pet peeves finish the manga

Where the main character gets so powerful or the story moves on such that the supporting characters become irrelevant and eventually just disappear. A lot of "blah" shonen does this, like Bleach, Id, Yakitate! Japan ... even the venerable DragonBall Z. >:-(

It's usually "going fancy" gone wrong, when we get the feeling that even the author doesn't know where the fuck does he come up with the stuff. This has to get my vote (aside from discontinued).

Other pet peeves of mine are rushed endings and ridiculous amounts of exposition for jack shit story-wise. Mahou Sensei Negima! Anyone? Specifically during the magic world arc.

I totally agree with you. But im saying the message would have that much more impact in a story. Why is shakespeares work still talked about today?

I hate when the author just has random crap popping up magically like 'oh hey! look we have a new villain! And right after we defeated the last one! funny coincidence huh? and look we magically have new powers too!and lets bring in new characters and make the story longer!"

yeah this is really hard to choose. I would say these are the ones I see the most often and hate
-Have such similar characters (looks or personality) that you confuse them
-Draw the same faces on different characters in other series
-Discontinue the series (or hiatus)
-Have lots of plot holes
-Have a plot that makes no sense

but the one that I dislike the most is discontinuing the series/hiatus. When the story is good and the mangaka stops, it's so damn frustrating. It's disappointing to see mangakas just give up. If it's not illness or death, I want an ending. I'm ok if there is a date for the hiatus to end but if there isn't, I can't stand it.

the one I care for the least is the art style. Sometimes crappy art doesn't mean crappy story so it's not the worse "pet peeve"

I'll give you most of those, but you're way off on Id. Id starts off with an incredibly strong protagonist, and his strength doesn't really change. Even in the beginning, the supporting cast was just there to add some color, not to lend much combat support.

Not much you can do about that with a "rage against the heavens" plot, the main character in those kinds of stories is meant to be a god among men.

I really like the basic idea behind this poll, but some of options create really obvious flaws. How many people enjoy it when their favorite series gets canceled? Or when the plot is full of holes? Or when a plot makes no sense (barring comedy)? The point of a pet peeve is that at least SOME people must be unaffected by it. If 99% of the reading population would be annoyed by it, it's not a pet peeve.

So besides those three, I've got to vote for being too formulaic. I don't know what it is about mainstream manga, but most of it is as trite and cliche as a Hollywood blockbuster. Just like a Hollywood blockbuster, mainstream manga is engineered to be a hit, with the same recycled plots, characters, and lines. It's all about the money, there's no room for vision, voice, or taste.

It's a real shame too, because manga has so much potential for storytelling. It mixes the dynamic movement of a film with the pacing of a novel. But it seems so few authors take full advantage of their medium.
