Kingdom pretty much fits completely. Starts out as an orphan with the dream of becoming a great general.

Feng Shen Ji kinda fits as well. MC hits rock bottom and... well, I'll leave out the rest. Better not read the reviews on this one, bunch of spoilers there.

Xian Ni I don't really remember too well on this but if I remember correctly the MC was poor and weak but by luck he found an artifact that allowed him to get stronger at a faster rate.
Battle Through the Heavens Starts high but hits rock bottom only his immediate family is there to support him. All others ridicule him. He becomes much stronger than he ever was.
Girls of the Wild's Poor family and MC initially very weak.
Tale of Eun Aran MC weak but gets stronger the more he gets the hang of the power he inherited.

Recommend series by Adachi Mitsuru, his pieces are timeless.

I don't think that Tenshi to Akuto!! fits what he/she is asking but the Adachi series might fit perfectly for what he/she is asking if he/she is looking at sports.
