I'm surprised how so many of you have been here since the beginning. I also suspect that people remember that they've been around either 10 or 15 years since those are multiples of 5, even if they haven't been around that long

**from a third-person POV **
I generally feel like the author put more thought into the romance when its 3rd person POV, so the romance hence is better generally. Otherwise, I feel like i read just as many bad romances from both male/female protagonist. I also feel like I have a higher success rate of the romance being good if the character is nb, for the same reason as 3rd person POV.
There just so many bad romances, that follow the same train of logic and same setup that any real thoughts/thinking from the writer/author can make a real difference.

Regarding the previous poll, I've been around in mangaupdates on 2008/2009, I think? I was 13 or 14 at that time. Those were the times when I first found scanlation sites..
And regarding this poll, honestly it doesn't matter to me. Good writing is the most important thing. Cliche stuffs will still make my heart flutters or aches if the plot and drama built properly.

This would be a subjective reason, but I think it's when the protagonist is male (in most, not all, cases).
I'm not a fan of gossip and mind games, and there's a whole lot more of that in stories when the protagonists are female. Besides that, most of the romance stories I'm aware of where the protagonist is female tend to have one or more of the following (in no particular order):
-) Excessive smut.
-) Unrealistic outcomes.
-) Emotional parts that drag on for far too long.
-) Presenting men in a more unrealistic light than even women get presented as in stories with a male protagonist.
To be clear, if I was a person who enjoyed those things, I'd probably say a female protagonist was better. But, I do not, so I think a male protagonist works better.
Especially since men tend to be the expected go-getters, and protagonists tend to be go-getting, and I see a lot of stories where the female protagonist is essentially passive for large portions of their respective romance story (which goes against the function of most protagonists).
I'm a jack of all trades but master of none. Too many jars and not enough hands.

Romance with a male protagonist that’s shounen or seinen is very, very different from romance with a male protagonist that’s boy’s love. It made it difficult for me to vote accurately.

To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of romance stories, so I voted "doesn't matter".
If they were more realistic and focused on actual drama instead of forced melodrama, then perhaps I'd like them more. However, in my experience... romance stories, by and large, focus on the most trivial and childish nonsense for me to even take them seriously.
