Hello, my first post anyways. What I'm going to discuss here is about "spiritual successorship" of two series that I'm currently reading, namely Ichigo 100% and Sket Dance. As Ichigo is to I''s and Sket is to Gintama, how do you think these two live up to being from just another copy of the genre they belong into or they provide a twist to a tried-and-tested formula?

In both series the originals are superior.

Sket Dance is much lighter and less offensive than Gintama, which makes it different and just as good imo. I still prefer Gin but I also love Bossun and his facial expression when he's nervous lol.

Sket Dance is similar to Gintama, but at the same time, it has your own personality. I prefer Sket Dance, but both are great series.

As for me, well I love both series (Gin and Sket) but when it comes to Ichigo and I''s, some characters are just lovable and some are just plain annyouing. Chinami Hashimoto of Ichigo, for me, is just one of the out of place characters with no correlation to the plot whatsoever. On the other hand, storylines can differ on how many characters a series has. Like Amachi (which doesn't appear in the meh adaptation of Ichigo) and the Kaimei Student Council, they add as a wall to be overcome (to both Manaka and the Sket Club) to reach their goals or to just add the rivalry factor of shonen manga.

I prefer Sket Dance to Gintama because it's more relatable in location (natch), and I"S to Strawberry 100% because I couldn't even finish one volume of the latter. I wouldn't bother calling Strawberry/I"S parallels like Sket and Gintama though, as from all I can see they're wholly different series, and there's been enough romance/harem type books out there that one doesn't really owe anything to the other.

Whereas obviously Sket and Gintama both operate on the alternating drama/comedy story system, and Kenta was an assistant to Sorachi, so I'm inclined to see that as a more clear spiritual succession.

I really dont think either of those manga are spiritual successors to the ones you mentioned since they are all written by different authors. If you said fairy tail was a spiritual successor to rave master i might have bought it. just because 2 manga by 2 completely different authors have similar styles doesn't make them spiritual successors. Look at bioshock vs system shock 2 they have nearly identical play styles and similar themed stories by the same group of people only they're set in different universes and the similarities are intentional.

I can easily relate to Sket Dance than Gintama, but I find both equally funny and regarding romance series, I like Ichigo 100%, it has less tension overall, but it isn't stale harem series like the rest. There is development starts from middle school to high school, most people will be played off by some comedy/ecchi moments added in, but if you can overlook it, the story and the characters are wonderful.

Its not all about the girls ^, the protagonist has a separate goal than chick finding. LOL
