In my opinion he should have ended up with aya who he saw first. It was really unexpected that he would end up with the blondy(nishino I think)

The story would have been awesome if not for the stupid ending(yes I feel it was like, hehe lets throw them a curve ball, and stick the main character with nishino)

I was led to believe that he would end up with aya from the first time he met her, so you can see how disappointed I am.

The first time I read the ending I was very disappointed because I liked Aya the most. After that I read it again and I understood Tsukasa's feelings and Aya's problem: the lack of decision. In the end, Manaka's decision is a mature one, He waited for Tsukasa until He could be with her again (in one point I thought that Manaka was going to be with Aya when Tsukasa went to France)

Some time later, I read the mangaka's final words: "I guess if you read the first chapter of Vol. one, it seemed like Manaka was going to get together with Toujou. When I wrote that, I only had the story thought out for the middle school saga, and I was also one of the people that thought Manaka was going to get together with Toujou and have a happy ending".

When I read that i felt better. The only thing I wish I could see is more about the future of Toujou.

I like this Manga so much; but it took two readings for me to fully accept the ending.

Because Yui in this manga just support character to Junpei and Nishino relation. But she really important character who keep Junpei and Nishino relation keep alive even in dire condition.

I think the ending caught so many people by surprise they haven't been able to stop talking about it. It's been over for at least 4 years now, right?

I was always partial to satsuki, her story was quite sad.
Pity nice people get the short end of the stick.

I think Nishino was the right choice.

Most of you guys are saying it should have been Aya, sure pick the under dog, the shy, quiet nerdy girl 🙄 you guys are so cliche. Tell me why is Aya any better than Nishino. Unlike Aya, Nishino actually showed initiative and determination. Aya just stood there watching from the distance being shy (which it seems some of you guys somehow find cute), then she waits until Junpei is dating Nishino to express her feelings. And just because Junpei saw Aya first doesn't mean he should end up with her.

Now lets go to Satsuki first she behaves like a kindergartner, bullying the guy she likes, then she becomes overly aggressive with her feelings. She didn't even give him a chance to like her she just kept on forcing her feelings on him, he had no space. I think don't think she has any redeeming qualities

@secretdesires, did you intentionally write Junpei's name as ichigo? or was it a mistake?LoL
Anyways, I agree with you that Nishino definitely was the better choice for Junpei because she deserved him and worked hard for him while aya, despite having all the advantages, barely made a move and even confused Junpei by firing mixed-signals at him. Nishino made Junpei grow in love with her by maturing and bonding with him both emotionally and physically while Aya was basically stuck at the same place and rarely made an effort to understand Junpei outside the world of filming or novels discussions. But I am not saying Aya isnt good enough, in fact Aya is a great character/girl by her own rights, very intelligent, beautiful, gentle and kind but her biggest drawback was she was very shy and her love for Junpei was a bit of a hero-worshipping which kept her from knowing Junpei more closely despite being with him for 4 years and this ultimately made Nishino the proper mate for Junpei as she pushed herself to know everything she could to know about both him and his dreams and she only thought how she could tailor herself to help him and be the perfect partner for him, who understood him the most. The biggest thing about Nishino was, she had most of the good qualities present in Aya and Satsuki mixed with her own good unique points, while she didnt have any of the weaknesses present in satsuki and Aya. Nishino could be mischievious, a tease, playful, agressive, loved exciting things like rollercoasters or skipping school or gets excited when Junpei thinks like a master-thief or dangerous situations like getting caught in a fire but at the same time she could be someone who was kind, understanding, shy, compassionate, level-headed, supportive, brave, independent, is someone who can have a philosophical outlook, discuss movies with Junpei or appreciate works of art. The immature Nishino from middle-school changed, matured and perfected herself for the love of her life( who she fell in love with before any of the other girls) in such a way, that easily made the her the most amazing girl in the manga 😀 The biggest example is her cooking ability, a girl who could barely cook anything in middle-school for Junpei changed and learnt from her mistake and made cooking her career and became a chef

Nishino should have dumped him. Manaka's below her in terms of looks, education and professional success. The same goes with Toujo. Kitaooji would have been the best fit since the only thing she has superior to him is looks.

As for what he deserved, he should have been abandoned by all for his cowardice, obliviousness and indecisiveness. Koyami deserved to keep his girlfriend more despite his butt ugly fish lips. At least he worked for the relationship and apparently continued to do so even after being dumped. Poor ugly bastard.

I definitely agree with you there, he didn't deserve any of them and he was a worthless coward and an asshole

[b]Not really I dont completely agree[/b.] Manaka did have his redeeming points and did have some influence on Nishino and did do stuff for her like he took a beating for her so that her fans could leave her in peace, Manaka saved her from thugs, Junpei rushed at a giant of a man(when he tried to punch Higure as he thought Higure attacked Nishino) without caring for his own safety just for her sake, Junpei went on the 3-day trip to cheer up Nishino, and he showed/introduced Aya a new world altogether. Not to mention Nishino loved Manaka for his kindness, his abilty to keep a level head in pressure/dangerous situations, his good point of never sucking up to people or praising someone to just get on their good sides, his ability to look beyond looks or just appearences in a girl, she was also attracted to his abilty to have a clear goal in his mind and the way he strived to fulfil his dreams, his honesty, and not to mention the first time Nishino fell in love with him when she was attracted to how he stood up for his friend and then completed his punishment and he appeared quite charismatic to Nishino as the whole school cheered on Junpei. Nishino also loved to hear Junpei sing as she loved his singing voice. Whatever else Manaka was, he wasn't a coward
Shit, I said so many good stuff about the person I dislike so much but really he wasnt useless and did much for all the girls both intentionally or unintentionally. Also if he wanted he could've cheated and 3timed the girls taking advantage of them all (like the guy in School Days) but he didn't. His only bad point was he was indecisive and sometimes would act perverted but you really cant blame him if you were in his situation and three drop-dead beauties were after you, anyone would have a hard time choosing.

And at the end, you cant say Manaka is less succesful than Nishino, as we saw a vastly changed Manaka at the reunion who was brimming with confidence and had a fresh look about him, not to mention his changed physique and handsome looks. He might be not as educated as Aya and Nishino as he didn't go to College but he proved through hard-work that he could achieve his dreams just as well, without going to College by getting an award and getting invited and got employed to join a well-known and reputed filming company, inshort he is a self-learned man which shows off his determination and drive to succceed in his goal no matter what as he worked his ass off to save money and was rewarded when he went to different countries, met new people and learnt many things which are in no way less than what is taught in classrooms, and you could tell, at the reunion Aya was impressed when she heard of this particular piece of info and you can bet Nishino would have been quite proud of this Junpei too. You could tell from his actions and manner of speech that he was no longer indecisive, on the contrary, I would say he is now quite the ladies man, what with his good-looks and how he handled all the girls at the reunion and how he easily brushed off Satsuki and had a mature conversation with Aya that had no indication of his old awkwardness around her, and how at the end he confidently and easily talks with Nishino and sweeps her off her feet. The sole reason Manaka broka up with Nishino before she left for France was because he wanted to become a man worthy of her, which I believe he did, but that was only for his own satisfaction as he didnt want to feel inferior to her as I think even if he remained the old Junpei, Nishino would still have loved him as he is the only guy who makes her heart flutter or gets her excited and it was said at the very beginning of the manga by Ookusa, that Nishino had very particular interests in guys, she didnt care about good-looking guys, if they didnt match her requirements of having something beyond good-looks, Ookusa is the biggest example of this, as he tried very hard to charm Nishino with his looks but Nishino didnt care at all about him as she could tell he was just another playboy Sorry for the long post but I just had to get this off as people can be quite hard and unfair on Manaka

As you can see, in the end Manaka wasn't inferiror to Nishino in either looks or professional success and although lacking academic qualification, his self-learnt qualifications isnt something that you can just laugh off

There are different types of cowardice out there. His is more a fear of intimacy than a fear of savage beatings. Manaka's been sandwiched between five different girls, clothed and naked, girlfriend and slight acquaintance, and the series was almost over before he did anything more than a kiss. He needed a girl like Nishino to take the lead, overcome his cowardice and become a man.

Manaka did not have an ability to look past looks. The reason he was attracted to Toujou was that he suspected and then found out she was the girl with the strawberry panties he met on the roof in the first chapter of the first volume. If she was really ugly, he just would have seen her as a literary genius that can help his movie making career.

In terms of his looks, he may have filled out in the end but he never had a mob of adoring fans stalking him the way Nishino did. He was a scrawny thing before that and hardly worth a look for his looks.

The way Manaka was going, he was five-six years behind Nishino in terms of the professional field. She was already working towards her career with help from a respected/established pastry chef even before graduating high school. Manaka flipped patties, worked in a dilapidated movie theater and was an on again off again cram school student. After graduation, Nishino was overseas apprenticed to top pastry chefs while he was digging ditches to finance a hobo-esque lifestyle. Only just before the reunion did he finally break into the film industry with an unknown position.

Manaka wasn't a bad guy. He just wasn't good enough to justify most of the kind of girls that went after him.
