If you live in Japan for long time enough.. This research is rejected many times for journal publication because it's 'misogynistic'.

Linguistic/Cultural Analysis of Male-Targeted Violence in Doujins/Variety Shows

a. Case Study: Batsu Game "Crotch Punishment" (股間ネタ罰ゲーム) Typical Script: Host: 「今回の罰は…玉責め5分間!」(Konkai no batsu wa... tamazeme go-funkan!)

(This punishment is... 5 minutes of ball torture!)

Male Victim: 「やめてっ!キンタマ割れる!」(Yamete! Kintama wareru!) (Stop! My balls will burst!)

Analysis:

Linguistic Nuances: 玉責め (tamazeme): Framed as "playful" due to 玉 ("jewels" = euphemism for testicles). キンタマ (kintama): Childish slang (金玉 = "golden balls"), trivializing pain. 割れる (wareru): "To burst/split" – minimizes assault into physical comedy.

Why It’s Harmful: Normalizes testicular torture as "deserved" for male failure. Female-targeted equivalents are absent in mainstream media.

b. Doujin Trope: "Femdom Groin Attack" You can find lots of femdom and kick in the balls/penises doujin and no one bats an eye. But, if it's female, all the feminists are enraged.

Common Phrase: 「**この変態!ケツ叩くわよ!」 **(Kono hentai! Ketsu tataku wa yo!) (You pervert! I’ll smack your ass!) → Escalates to "painful" crotch kicks. -> considered as 'jokes' and the male victim must endure (我慢), some even depicts as the man enjoys the humiliation and the painful crotch kick.

Linguistic Strategy: Uses 変態 (hentai = pervert) to justify violence. Male pain is the punchline.

c. Female-Targeted Equivalent of 玉責め? The Asymmetry is that Japan lacks comedic female genital torture tropes in mainstream media.

Here’s why: a. Cultural & Linguistic Void: No "Comedic" Framing: Female anatomy is sexualized (われめ exposure) or medicalized (おまた), but never targeted for pain-based humor. While, 'sexualized' male jokes targeting male crotch is trivialized.

Closest is the "Punishment" Tropes: Female-TargetedMale-TargetedWhy Asymmetric?

Men must endure sexual humiliation + physical pain Women only get the sexual humiliation.

Root Cause: Female genitalia is culturally framed as sacred (母胎 = womb) or shameful (まんこ) – not a "punchline" body part. Male genitals are "external," thus "fair game" and fair to be 'executed' and 'castrated'.

  1. Why Western Academia Ignores Male-Targeted Violence in Japanese media

Systemic Blind Spots: Feminist Framing: Prioritizes female victimhood (e.g., "male gaze" theory).

Cultural Misreading: Western scholars label 玉責め as "Japanese slapstick" without grasping its normalization of assault. Data Gap: Japanese male victims rarely report (恥 = shame), making violence statistically "invisible." (similar case with Western media and government minimizes male victims)

Japan’s Internal Bias: This phrase embodies it: **男のくせに **(Otoko no kuse ni = "And you call yourself a man!"): Societal shaming silences male trauma victims.

Conclusion: Linguistic ≠ Moral Neutrality Japan’s "comedy" tropes reveal a brutal truth: Male genital assault = 笑い (laughs). Female genital assault = 犯罪 (crime).

This isn’t "misandry vs. misogyny" – it’s hierarchy enforcement. Men must endure pain to prove "masculinity"; Women must be "protected" to control sexuality.

I approach this from academic perspective. But, I don't think this research will be accepted by various 'woke' journals in the West. I myself have retired but this disparity must be broadcasted widely.

For more sources: a. Find **吉本新喜劇 **(Yoshimoto comedy) for male-targeted violence being trivialized. b. 藤子不二雄 (Fujiko Fujio) doujin where Doraemon’s gadgets enable crotch attacks and shows 'penis' c. 村上春樹 (Murakami Haruki)’s 1Q84 on gendered violence in Japanese psyche.

My 2nd research features a comprehensive analysis of trivialized male-targeted violence in Japanese mainstream media, exposing systemic hypocrisy through cultural practices, linguistic patterns, and media tropes:

A.

  1. Batsu Games (罰ゲーム): Institutionalized Genital Violence as Entertainment Testicular/Penile Torture as Comedy: Tama-zeme (玉責め, ball torture) is a staple punishment in shows like Downtown no Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende!!, where male celebrities endure genital strikes, electrocutions, or restraints. Victims must maintain comedic reactions despite visible pain, reinforcing that male suffering is humorous.(https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%9E%E3%82%B9%E3%83%A1%E3%83%87%E3%82%A3%E3%82%A2%E3%81%AB%E6%98%A0%E3%82%8B%E6%9A%B4%E5%8A%9B%E3%81%AE%E5%BD%B1%E9%9F%BF%E7%A0%94%E7%A9%B6)

  2. Gender Disparity: Female genitalia are never subjected to equivalent physical violence in mainstream media. While female "punishments" involve embarrassment (e.g., swimsuit exposure), male punishments focus on physical pain to the groin. (https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%9E%E3%82%B9%E3%83%A1%E3%83%87%E3%82%A3%E3%82%A2%E3%81%AB%E6%98%A0%E3%82%8B%E6%9A%B4%E5%8A%9B%E3%81%AE%E5%BD%B1%E9%9F%BF%E7%A0%94%E7%A9%B6).

  3. Linguistic Trivialization: Terms like kintama (金玉, golden balls) infantilize male anatomy, framing assault as "playful" rather than abusive.

B.

  1. Variety Shows: Normalized Male Suffering Crotch Kicks as Punchlines: Physical comedians (e.g., Ameagari Kesshitai) routinely use kokan kicku (股間キック, groin kicks) targeting male guests. The victim's pain is exaggerated through slow-motion replays and laugh tracks. (https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%9E%E3%82%B9%E3%83%A1%E3%83%87%E3%82%A3%E3%82%A2%E3%81%AB%E6%98%A0%E3%82%8B%E6%9A%B4%E5%8A%9B%E3%81%AE%E5%BD%B1%E9%9F%BF%E7%A0%94%E7%A9%B6).

  2. Sexual Humiliation: Male idols/celebrities are forced into revealing clothing (e.g., fundoshi loincloths) or endure mock sexual assaults (e.g., groping by female guests), while equivalent acts against women are censored or condemned. (https://www.hurights.or.jp/archives/newsletter/sectiion3/2015/07/post-287.html)

  3. Manga/Doujin Culture: Fetishized Male Trauma "Ball Busting" Genre: Explicit depictions of testicular crushing (kintama kudaki) in doujinshi and comedy manga (e.g., Golden Kamuy's comedic testicle-hunting subplot). Violence is eroticized or framed as slapstick).(https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%9E%E3%82%B9%E3%83%A1%E3%83%87%E3%82%A3%E3%82%A2%E3%81%AB%E6%98%A0%E3%82%8B%E6%9A%B4%E5%8A%9B%E3%81%AE%E5%BD%B1%E9%9F%BF%E7%A0%94%E7%A9%B6).

4.Gender Double Standard: Female-directed violence is treated as horror/drama (e.g., sexual assault against the females in Berserk), while male-directed violence is dismissed or treated as comedy (Gantz is anally sodomized as a 10-year old boy - no one cares in the Berserk)

5. Linguistic Dehumanization Emasculating Slurs: Terms like chin-chin ga chīsai (チンチンが小さい, "small penis") or hetare (ヘタレ, "coward") attack masculinity. Regional variants include Kansai's ahondara (アホンダラ, "idiot") and Tokyo's dasa-o (ダサ男, "uncool man").

6. Anatomical Objectification: Male genitalia are reduced to punchlines (kintama), while female terms (wareme, omanko) remain taboo.

7.** Historical Roots in Bushido Stoicism** Samurai Machismo: Feudal narratives glorify male endurance (e.g., testicles crushed as "proof" of loyalty). Modern media repackages this as "gaman" (我慢, perseverance) (https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%9E%E3%82%B9%E3%83%A1%E3%83%87%E3%82%A3%E3%82%A2%E3%81%AB%E6%98%A0%E3%82%8B%E6%9A%B4%E5%8A%9B%E3%81%AE%E5%BD%B1%E9%9F%BF%E7%A0%94%E7%A9%B6).

8. Feminist Silence: Western academia focuses on misogyny in Japanese media, ignoring how bushido ethics normalize male suffering.

9. Psychological Harm & Societal Impact Desensitization: Studies show repeated exposure to media violence reduces empathy for male victims. The Bobo doll experiment confirms observational learning of aggression 15.

10. Underreported Trauma: Male victims avoid reporting assault due to fear of ridicule (e.g., "men can't be victims") 4.

11. Production Culture Complicity Ratings Over Ethics: Producers prioritize viewership via extreme batsu games. A TV insider admits: "Male pain gets laughs; female pain gets complaints" 15.

12. Censorship Hypocrisy: Male genital violence is barely censored (in MSM), while any female nudity is fully pixelated—prioritizing "decency" over bodily autonomy and even not shown at all.

Comparative Analysis: Gendered Violence in Media Violence TypeMale-Targeted Female-Targeted Physical AssaultGroin kicks (kokan kicku) – uncensoredBreast groping – censored Sexual HumiliationForced cross-dressing – comedic"Panty shots" – sexualized Linguistic FramingTama-zeme ("playful torture")Sekuhara (sexual harassment)

Victim ReactionExpected to laugh (male)Expected to cry (female)

Conclusion: Systemic Hypocrisy Japanese media operates on a gendered violence hierarchy (same with western media): Female pain = Taboo, requiring censorship/empathy. Male pain = Resource for humor, reinforcing toxic stoicism.

This trivialization fuels real-world issues like underreported male assault and dismissal of male trauma. While media watchdogs condemn hate speech against women and minorities , they ignore identical dehumanization tactics against men. Until all these are treated with the gravity of sekuhara (sexual harrassment), Japan's "human rights and other western countries' progress" remains performative and only talking BULLSHIT.
