Anime Spring Season 2019
The schedule. The season is quite busy so let´s quickly plow through. This may also be the last time I complain about Netflix as an anime distributor if at least 2 of these work out.
7 Seeds is delayed to June. This is a Gonzo production (how the hell does the studio stay afloat?) with a bunch of no-names attached and the manga is 35 volumes long. Meaning that the show´s quality, it´s pacing and it´s length are all in doubt. The source material is stellar of course but is somewhat changing to adapt and you can´t just cut a bunch of stuff with a cast as large as this. The anime is thus a huge question mark.
Carole & Tuesday The premise is both convoluted and generic. Neither Netflix nor Bones are signs of surefire quality on top but Mr. Bebop is. I´ll keep my horses in check but this has a good chance of turning out great and it´s most of all a promising original anime. How rare are those these days?
Kidou Senshi Gundam - The Origin - Zenya Akai Suisei The 5 part OVA was cut into 13 slices to fill a 1 cour run, meaning that I have no reason to watch this. The shows itself is pretty good of course but you need to have at least seen the film trilogy re-cut of Gundam 1978/79 to follow along. 8,5/10
Kono Oto Tomare! is a fairly solid music manga that isn´t another goddam K-On clone. It´s also one of the better Jump (SQ) properties. I won´t stick around but this is fine enough.
One Punch Man S2 The animation quality is clearly a lost cause due to J.C.Staff but this is when the manga actually got good, as it started to develop the sprawling cast that was introduced in the 3rd act of S01. The quality of the story itself will again drop once this enters cour 2, as the manga sadly switched over from slice of life to a random tournament and then another earth invasion without proper stakes, but I at least cared about some of the now developed cast at that point.
Shingeki no Kyojin S3 The lines are drawn by now but the manga only improved in quality to me as it went on, aside of the Shounen-battle-y Female Titan arc. You know, the one casual anime fans liked best? This should be the best season yet, till the next one that is. Man, that one will be legit controversial.
Ultraman I am cautiously optimistic due to the GitS SAC director but Netflix and the 2nd director leave me with doubt. The production values also seem of mixed quality but the source manga is solid. Ths gritty-ish re-quel has almost nothing to do with the OG Ultraman btw., thankfully.
There are a LOT of movies of interest, for once, and Golden Kamuy just got another OVA.
Cencoroll 2 The decade-old short film is getting another 25 min. long sequel. The anime industry is wild you all. DBS Broly is coming to Blu-ray and is the first straight out good GB film aside of Path to Power. The film clearly lacks 20 minutes of content and the structure is wack but action and animation fans will still have a good time. Easily the first sign that DBS isn’t a total write-off.
Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara I haven´t really liked anything the formerly worthwhile director or his new studio produced recently but I´ll give it a chance. The same goes for Trigger´s Promare.
Lupin the IIIrd: Mine Fujiko no Uso speaks for itself. None of the 70s-universe offerings truly work on a script level but the rarely seen pulp style still carried them all.

Yeah, that's the one that interests me most. I won't lie, I've not read any of it yet though I've been keeping an eye on it for.......well, for years now....... I just can't risk starting it and not getting to read it in full if scanlations break down.
Right, 35 volumes, let's hope there are plans for more than one season at the least......of course, looking back, Glass Mask had 42 volumes before the 2005 adaptation and they mashed that into 51 eps and called it good >_<

Looking at the series' status, there's only four volumes left to translate, so they're in the home stretch. Do you really think that they'll drop it by this point?
But, then again, there are numerous series that received an anime, an OVA, or even a movie, yet still haven't received any translations. And, there are some instances like You Are Under Arrest! and Cyborg 009, which were partially translated, but eventually dropped.

Um, look, let's not jinx anybody here, but c'mon, I've got more than just a few series on my wish list that lack one or two chapters to be completed that probably never will be, so yeah, I take no chances anymore on unfinished scanlations.
I look to hear how the 7 Seeds anime is with great interest 😀
Otakumole has all of 7Seeds translated, outside of c.165 and 167, beginning with c.142. I thus expect to be done with it by the time the anime comes (i have been on c.164 for a year).
The problem is having the necessary account to access the site, as it has been closed to invites outside of a short window in time that allowed to invite new users. The news group´s pace makes all of this a non-issue if they keep it up and the Netflix distributed anime is only bringing new eyes to it. The manga is save to start reading due to these 3 factors.

The still unreleased and repackaged Gundam: The Origin (8,5/10) is a known quantity. 7 Seeds is even further of. The overall anime seasons is a success yet someone needs to cart off Kunihiko Ikuhara to Arkham Asykum. The 2nd half of the pilot to his all-boy kappa-anal-adventure (I ain´t even kidding) nearly shut my brain off despite being at least better than his sleep-inducing lesbian-alien-bears show. No more for me, thanks.
Carole & Tuesday Mr. Bebop is “only” the chief direct which worked out great on Space Dandy yet I already have a deja-vu. This pilot is better than that one but not by much. The show should have started with the bridge meeting with Tuesday´s ridiculous origin being coved in a short montage during that song. I am a bit worried for her due to the extremely bland characterization. Carole already works on the other hand. The animation budget doesn’t seem that high and I don´t get why the vocalists aren’t the VA´s but their first song was at least good enough. The show could easily pick up soon, even if the 24 ep. run-time seems overlong but I wouldn’t be surprised if this ended up being a 2nd Michiko & Hatchin. Meaning that the art direction, the diversity (at least by anime standards) and setting could carry the anime even if the scripts don´t. We´ll see but Watanabe earned my time. 7/10
One Punch Man No one would have complained about J.C.Staff´s perfectly fine animation if S01 also looked like this but it doesn´t. The real problem is the direction as there is little flow or logic to the movement. I would even say that the manga is more kinetic -much more that is- and the anime´s facial expressions are lifeless, despite the fact that the story will remain in slice-of-life mode for quite some time. Ho boi. The season’s story will be a noticeable improvement on the last one, so one step forward and one back. It´s a shame that the Madhouse team didn’t have time to return, as we got this side-grade and their outright embarrassing Boogiepop adaptation for the price of one. The future success or failure of this mess will be fascinating to watch. 6?/10
Shingeki no Kyojin S3.2 comes out on April 29 but this is mostly a panel by panel adaptation so I already know what I will think of ep.50. 8,5/10
Ultraman shows that GitS SAC S03 is in good hands and Kamiyama is clearly back to his usual form after a one-out with Cyborg 009. IG technically adapted 7,5 volumes in 13 eps. but the story underwent occasionally major changes and streamlining, the revamped female lead is now a real character for example, so pacing isn´t a major issue. This is actually an improvement on the solid source manga and most of the CG work is fairly impressive for a TV budget. Extensive mo-cap was used and is clearly noticeable in the very fluid DMC style action scenes. Sign me up for S02 of this Christopher Nolan/Zack Snyder style gritty re-quel of a 60s children's show (!?!). This ain´t a complete joke btw. as the next manga arc has a 9/11-ish alien attack on NY. 7,5/10
JoJo: Vento Aureo and Dororo are ongoing for me. (The new Dororo manga is alright btw.)
So are DuckTales, The Simpsons and Teen Titans Go.
Penguin Highway is about to get its international home release and I highly recommend the film, as it was the beast anime film of 2018. It´s kind of Contact (1997) the anime, just with different 3rd act problems. Justice League vs. The Fatal Five was a fun return to the JLU canon and will hopefully lead to more. Batman is also about to meet the Ninja Turtles in animation. How come the Turtles haven´t gotten an anime since the early 90s? The Afro Samurai/Batman Nina team(s) should get on that! Till next season, which looks downright abysmal.
