why do mangaka feel we have to relate to the main character?

A lot of the main characters in shounen manga are really weak and really not that cool.
why do mangaka assume that's the majority of the manga reading community.
movies isn't based on real life and it's still selling
one piece's luffy is definately not based on a otaku and it is the best selling manga series.
they need to get their heads out of their a$$

It takes talent to make a 40+ volume manga about some cool strong guy and keeping it interesting. It's a lot easier to have someone start off weak and grows as the series continues. That way the shounen power creep won't be such a problem. Who cares about cliches, shounen publishers like Shounen Jump just care about having a long franchise they can milk.
