My friend's birthday is coming up, and she mentioned that she wanted pencils. One of her hobbies is art, so I want to get her some pencils that are good for art and comfortable for writing. I know very little about art and such so I wanna ask you guys for advice on what type to get. Keep in mind that I'm so poor that even in my dreams I'm broke, so please don't suggest over-the-top expensive pencils. Oh yeah, she loses stuff easily, so I was hoping to buy like a box of them (anywhere from 4-24 is good)

I'm not sure about art, but the one I use for writing is fairly good. It's Pentel Side FX 0.7

Shouldn't ONE mechanical pencil be enough?
Before I went digital, I had one of the ones that has the button on the side to push the lead out (as opposed to the button being at the top). It was nice and comfortable...can't really say much about pencils, really : S
Maybe get her that, some lead...and maybe a chain so that she doesn't lose it >_>

Hm, the chain idea is really good 😀 I'll look for a chain on a pencil.

I use a Pentel Graph Gear 1000 pencil for drawing. It's a bit heavy, but it's comfortable and comes in different lead sizes (.9, thickest, through .3mm, thinnest). My pencil uses .3mm lead because I wanted the smallest lead size for accurate, precise shading. I don't suggest buying this size of lead pencil though because .3mm lead is rarely found in-stores. :\

If you're going for mechanical pencils, I suggest buying only one and then maybe a couple lead refills or something. But if you want a whole box, you should get a small set of Staedlter Mars Lumograph graphite pencils.

I suggest rotring rapid pro. Before i using rapid pro, i obsessed with pentel smash. But rapid pro good pencil for writing. I have no idea how to use it about art.

I didn't realized there were mechanical pencils made specifically for drawing. I usually use normal pencils like the HB drawing pencil sets in my art class which usually come in 12 sticks, with ranges of hardness for varying lighter/darker tones. I think you could find them in any art supply store, and it shouldn't be too expensive.

I have an every day pencil 0.5 Pentel Twist-Erase and doodle with it from time to time, but I honestly don't know how that fares for real drawing purposes. Maybe this site can help you out.
