I realize that i am probably a bit behind but

I just checked out the site and was thinking about subscribing to the US monthly Shonen release.

Was just wondering what everyones thoughts were though on the Viz translations - i actually got the idea from the US Gintama that i just got in the mail today - read one chapter and while it is great overall - i did notice that a few of the jokes had been changed to something a little more kid freindly (on a side note - wtf? lol it is GINTAMA the book even says OLDER Teens only, older teens can't have a boob joke 😕 )

I will probably subscribe anyway but i would hate to still be getting these things in a year and just keep getting pissed off by crappy kid freindly translations

Why not just read scanlations? US shounen jump comes out every month only, and is way behind japanese shounen jump. And yea, the translations from Viz and Tokyopop sucks ass, they also tend to add in random stuff to make it more "American" like excessive "dude" and stuff like that. I suppose if you don't mind the crappy translations, you can order it, but I would advise against it. With stuff like Gintama, you're just bound to get the same crap again and again like you already experienced.

eh - i just like the books sometimes = i started with Gintama because of the huge gaps in the scanlations and the US Relases cover a large part of that gap - i really did not think at the time that they would be that different i guess

hmm, i agree. stick with scanlations.My brother subscribes. but my brother is little little, so i don't complain too much about them toning it down. and shonen jump is waaaaaay behind. In naruto,

The other ones are lagging as well. I would say save that money for buying the graphic novels or games. At least then you have exactly what you want.

They really don't. Translation is much more an art form than it is an exact science, and the truth of the matter is that the majority of online translators are un-vetted (i.e. no interview, thorough certification of abilities, etc.), unpaid volunteers who may or may not actually have enough experience to perform the job to a higher degree of excellence, unlike the people who are actually being hired to do so. I'm certain that to an extent shounen titles are Americanized a bit more since (from a general standpoint) they are targeted at a younger audience (I don't really buy any but Hayate, so I don't have much ground to stand on here), but really all the official translators are guilty of is making the language flow more. It seems to have become a meme to bash them, but the reality is that on the whole they do a pretty good job, with a few exceptions.

Sorry for the rant, but this pops up a lot and it really bothers me -_-;;.

Anyway, more on topic, I would agree that the magazines are generally a waste of money. I think one or two of them are actually ahead (yen press?) of the volumes, but they're in a less permanent state than the actual compiled versions. I'd save your money for those, since they're almost the same price.

Well ya - there is that - it was actually pretty cheap though - 29.99 for the year - 12 books though since it is monthly and not weekly - the other thought behind it was that i would end up reading some stuff that i had not read before such as some One Peice (i have only have followed the anime so far)

As long as the manga does not replace the cigaretts with Candy Canes like the did with One Piece Anime -

Download scanlations - and support by buying the japanese tankubon.

Don't support the horrible translations if you don't like them, otherwise they'll continue to do it, thinking its working.

And purchasing the japanese works means the producers/mangaka get more money anyway, so there will be more manga >.>.

Or better yet, subscribe to Japanese jump 😉 . Pretty cheap all told.

My gawd, you read titles in Jump as scanslations and complain about the professional trans? At least they're accurate, despite the added 'dude' on every page. I know that the argument for crap speed translations is that 'they're amateurs, so you can't expect them to be good', but if that's what you're referencing as 'good' translations, then you're unfortunately never going to see what the characters actually say.

About 5 years ago, I'd say that you should buy it and support the idea of magazines in America. It's a great system that they have in Japan, and I'd like to see it come into a larger scale in the states (like maybe moving to every 2 weeks instead four), but it's been going for a while, and I doubt they'll change the publishing frequency. Only buy it if you're a big fan of the Viz publications (they don't only put Jump titles in there... they basically just stole the name and do whatever they want with it).

I have to agree with Creshinbon on this. The official translators are getting paid to do the job well, and more than likely the translator is a fan of the series itself.
And to be fair, most of Shonen Jump's material is light-hearted kiddy action, its not as if adding another "dude" is going to take away from its atmosphere. And more importantly, I find most official translations quite fluid and smooth-moving, so I don't see the problem some of you have.
And; I don't see why people insist of having access to the newest chapter the minute it comes out; can't people read the series in their own time (i.e. buy Shonen Jump mag monthly, as opposed to rushing ahead to get the latest)? Is it seen as uncool if you don't know the latest happenings? Is it embarassing to be only new to a popular and long-running series?

Well to me, the extra stuff translators sometimes add annoys me. It already has a different feel to it when it gets scanlated/translated then when you read it straight up Japanese, and the extra stuff just adds to that. I can read raws[although it takes me much longer than english], and I can already see lots of difference/figure of speech from the Japanese/English translations, although they have the same idea, the whole "feeling" or w/e and the way they say it just isn't the same as the original[obviously].

As for me, why wait 1 month for something when you can get it right now, especially if that manga is addicting? Lots of people already can't wait for the next week. And monthly shounen mag is WAY too slow, it's probably will take them 15 years to catch up to weekly shounen jump from Japan at the pace they're at.

Not really complaining, but I prefer the online "amateur" scanlations to the official ones actually. Just making the point that weekly scanlations>monthly shounen jump in America. If manga magazines come to America, at the same pace as Japan, then I would support and buy it. As for now, I'll just stick to scanlations and buying raw manga.
