Tried googling it, but couldn't find anything post-2010, and it seems like things would've changed by then. If not - please point me to a good link.

I have a fair amount of free time on my hands right now, and would like to do something productive with it. Just need the skillset.

However. The material needs to be to my liking for me to continue after the initial appreciation-phase. I.e:

Shoujo is a no-go. You'd only waste your time teaching me if that's what you want me to do as I'd leave for something more interesting to me after I got a hang of it.

Something like Zipang, however, is the main reason why I even want to do it in the first place and will commit fully to it.

So if you're looking for someone, don't mind teaching it first, give me a shout so I can look at what you're scanlating and guess where it'd fall on my spectrum.

(And though popular series already have all the help they need, I'm not interested in that either. I'm looking for titles like Zipang, that are very promising but lost in the shadows of the Narutos, One Pieces and Berserks.)

Even if the scanlating tutorials you've found are a bit old, many of the basics should still be the same nowadays and would really give you the fundamentals to make learning from scanlating groups a lot easier and faster. Not that I'm saying most scanlation groups wouldn't be willing to teach people, but you should remember that they probably learned most of the stuff from old tutorials before adding their own improvements. One of my favourites that I still use today for references is this one.

And if you already have a specific genre you're interested in, you can always try applying/asking scanlation groups that are currently scanlating your favourite series as almost all groups are constantly recruiting.

Why should you teach someone who openly says they're gonna leave anyway if the series they work on is not to their liking? What a scanlation group needs is people who are devoted to the group, not to a certain manga.

it is not really hard to edit stuff. firstly what kind of graphic program do you use?

i am a photoshop user so i cant really comment on other graphic editing tools (GIMP, SAI, ETC)...

but the basics are the same, grayscale the raw file, levelled it, clean the noise up, touch up whatever needs to be darken/lightened (in photoshop its using dodge and burn tool as basis for that).

like some other folks have replied, even if you find any guide from 2010 it is still useable. the graphic program doesnt change much. the process to edit the raws are pretty much the same.

I remember the guide I used for learning as if it was yesterday... despite it being 2009.

I say it openly, because I don't believe in "getting stuff" under false pretenses. And you don't ever need to lie to get what you want.

Obviously, I'm going to be devoted to the group if our interests align, but ONLY if our interests align. I don't see why I, or anyone, should/would devote their time translating stuff that they don't even like.

A group usually got more than one project and if you apply for them, you should be prepared to help out on projects which you don't read and maybe not even like as well. If you can't do that you're better off going solo or making your own group.

Not really, you can just apply for projects that interest you, I don't know how your group operates, but most group will have it set staff on certain projects, it's more effective to have staff that are interested in the serie working on it than ppl who just like to work. 🙂

As for whether he wants to help out with other projects or not, it's his decision, since he's doing this as a hoby, I don't see why he have to help out with something that he doesn't have interest in. It will just create a bad atmosphere in the group, and the release might be delayed.

Also I prefer people like him. Make things clear from the beginning so there won't be any bitching later on.

Damn, that's a shitload of links. Highly appreciated! I agree with your sentiment about "newb-editors". Heard that a bunch of times around town, and that's partially why I was as upfront about my restrictions - "You'll only get my commitment if I feel the source-material is to my liking."- so that people would know what they were getting into giving up their time.

Anyone know how long in general it takes to learn how to make at least adequate edits? I have no interest in applying to anyone until I'm able to make chapters that I would have no problem reading.

How long it takes varies from person to person and depends on how quickly they can pick up on decent editing practices like knowing when to dodge, when to burn, what the right levels should be, how lazy they are at removing noise, and how good they are at redrawing. I would say to go do the tutorials and go find some raw manga of differing quality. Try your hand at editing a few chapters of each and see where it gets you.

Just like StarlightDreams said, try find some raw and try it out by following the guides, else just go to some scanlators site and get their tests and try it out. 🙂

That's the plan. Is anyone aware of a website where "wannabetranslators" put their shit? Sure, I could just practical TS'ing jumbled sentences, but I want to maximise my time.

Something like the last 100 chapters of samurai deeper kyo would be a terrific start, since any Job would be better than that dreadful mess.

u can find alot of translations at http://mangahelpers.com/translators/ though they are not wannabe but are acutally translators, so if you want to use their works and upload it somewhere u have to ask for permission else if it's just for training i dont think u need to ask for permission. 🙂
