Hercules had it's moments (like Hades and the muses), but given that it really has absolutely nothing to do with the actual legend of Hercules other than some of the names used, I just can't bring myself to acknowledge its existence. (Hera is rolling in her metaphorical grave over this version of the story.) 🤣

(Yes, I'm a purist of Greek mythology, I can't help it.)

Someone who feels the same way! I just can't bring myself to watch it anymore because every time I do I get fustrated with it's inaccuracy. I mean I know it's Disney and therefore not entirely accurate but Hercules is just not even remotely close.

Eh, I never really cared about the inaccuracies. I mean most of these movies are based on something and have many many differences (Lion King = Hamlet, Little Mermaid is based on a German tale that is much darker).

But Hercules is my second favorite. The first is definitely Lion King. Aladdin get's special mention though since my friends and I always since A Whole New World when we go nrb 🤣

Mulan, definitely - I think it's the only Disney movie I own. As has been stated before, the music is great, and the plot is awesome. Mulan herself kicks major butt - finally, a Disney girl who can do something! And I love Shang who, unlike most Disney male leads, actually seems to have some faults - of course, we all adore him anyway. But my favorite character was Mushu - funniest sidekick EVER, voiced by the always-hysterical Eddy Murphy. And, of course, it helps that the whole movie was set in China, which is close to Japan =P

Coming in second would have to be Aladdin - another movie with a great soundtrack (Prince Ali is on my iPod =P), and equally fantastic characters. Jafar made for a great villain, and the comic relief team of Genie, Carpet, and Abu made me seriously LOL. And, of course, I loved Jasmine - another heroine who actually tries to do something - perhaps she's not quite as awesome as Mulan, though, since she only wanted to chose who she would marry, not save her country xD. And Aladdin himself is, like Shang, another of the small number of Disney 'princes' who actually seems somewhat human.

In third place, I guess it has to be The Little Mermaid. While Prince Eric annoyed me with his flawlessness - and then let himself be hypnotized by the villain into marrying her! What happened to love conquers all? - I really liked Ariel. Another Disney girl who actually took some action to get her prince. I mean, she basically sold her soul - and her voice - to the devil, just so she could be with the one she loved. Now that takes some guts.

Hmm...in fourth, I think it's Beauty and the Beast (again, loved the songs), then the Lion King (maybe this would be ranked higher if the last time I'd seen it hadn't been several years ago), and after that Tarzan (I always thought Terk was a boy, but apparently she's female O-o), and I guess Pocahontas would be seventh (the entire movie was ruined for me when I realized it was a real story, and that the stupid sequel was true - she went all the way to England, just to marry someone else T-T). Hercules and The Hunchback of Notredame I can't really rank, since I've never seen them ^^;;. ...I liked your entire post except that part. >.> It makes me think - and I am in no way trying to be rude here - what does it matter? Does the setting make it more superior than other movies that weren't based "near Japan"?

This is probably me overthinking... but still...

I like your taste, and Prince Ali is an epic song. -starts humming it along with I'll Make A Man Out of You-

Pocahontas is a real story? >__>;

ALSO, ALSO, YES, DISNEY FAILS AT SEQUELS. My eyes. ;__; The only thing I liked about Mulan II was that Shang and Mulan got married, and they had lovey-dovey moments there (and a kiss at the end! wootz xD). Even if it was basically all to satisfy fans like me, STILL. XD;

My favourite couple is Mulan / Shang. xD Geez, amazing couple. ;;

Maybe it makes it more "anime-ish"? 🤣

I agree about Mulan. (about everything, and I'm too lazy to type it>.> )

The little mermaid was... meh... But the end... I tottaly didn't expect Disney would do such an ending.

I was always fond of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It had a really different tone to other Disney films at the time.
Can't say I ever liked The Lion King though, I think its over-rated....
And aren't Tarzan and Mulan a little too-recent to be even considered among the other classics?

Wait, a horrible mistake has occurred here. The Fox and the Hound isn't on this list! That was def my favorite Disney movie.... heck it's one of my favorite movies period. I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried as a kid when I first watched it.

All of the 'old school' Disney movies (read, before they started up again in the 90s) aren't listed. If they were, then not much of the newer stuff would have received points. (I'd have gone with Sleeping Beauty instead, for example.)

That's why the title refers to the Disney 'renaissance'.

Ho boy was I obsessed with The Lion King when I was little. I even made a paper mache Pride Rock for my Lion King toys (since there wasn't one at the time) with my parents. I played with that thing almost every day. I also had a Lion King party for my 8th birthday. That was my favorite 90's Disney movie. For a more classic movie, my favorite would hafta be... well I have a few favorite classics...

Bambi
Lady & the Tramp
Dumbo
Aristo Cats
The Jungle Book
The Fox and the Hound

And that's it. I watched those movies over and over too. But still, The Lion King was my #1 favorite.

I kinda just assumed that all Disney movies like that were made around the same time since I was given a huge pile of Disney VHS when I was a little kid. My bad.

But The Fox and the Hound is still awesome 😀

after re-watching most of the ones on the list, gotta say Aladdin takes the cake.

Mulan is still up there tho.
