But it seems to have developed an extensive array of goods that hit off well with the international consumer, like manwha, k-dramas, kpop, etcetera. People keep talking about the Hallyu Wave phenomenon too. I think Korean entertainment has a pretty big impact on the Asian market too? o.o So, can it have the potential to be equal to Japan? Although Japan is unique which makes it so lovable and desired. The craziest thing you can imagine gets sold there. 🤣 It is its charm! While, Korea is more Westernized, IMO.

Not yet, manwha is going more mature in korea in my opinion but it leaves out much of the shounen aspect of things and compared to japans output of manga it doesn't really compare much especially since they also corner the market in everything manga related there, also westernized manga aren't that good (in my opinion), i dislike most westernized manga, so i don't completely agree with you when you say their manga is more westernized, mainly because i don't understand what that means really to you and i like manwha despite hating westernized manga

i don't know.. one could probably measure this by looking at livejournal groups and the likes. personally i cannot remember ever watching a korean animation (someone got a link to some? seriously i've never heard of one) or anything, but manhwa, that is from korea.

yes. they do hate each other. and therefore, some koreans may even be offended by such forum title... Infact, I'm not sure what the OP is intending with such title.

k-drama & idol industry are larger than japanese counter parts in general across asia i believe... For example dae jang geum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dae_Jang_Geum#Commercial_success) has had ridiculously huge success - reaching 1st rank most popular show in foreign countries.

In terms of manwha/manga/cartoons, Korea's is a small fraction compared to what jap comes out with, but in terms of animation, it's actually a bit more confusing comparison. Lot of the actual animating gets done in Korea, regardless of origin of the anime/cartoon itself. For example, significant majority of high production western cartoons (ex: simpsons) is drawn by koreans. Lot of animes are drawn by koreans. I dont know why this trend exists, but guess they're the best skilled people they can get for cheapest possible. Of course, ownership, story, etc are developed by the originating country. If you are just tracing the $$$, yea, jap are way ahead of korea in anime. It simply sells less in Korea, therefore, it's only logically following it and will probably never pass japan, since culturally, cartoon's not as a big thing.

Are there korean animation? Yes.... and no.
For example, Dooli (just google it - there are quite a number of seasons for its animation as well) is probably the biggest korean cartoon character (like disney's mickey). But it never made a single step outside of korea (ie non-koreans in foreign countries). So their promotion of their own animated cartoon to the external world is nearly non-existent.

lol. I don't think they're quite there yet. But they are catching up. They still lack much in the anime department and I'm sure they don't have near the amount manga as Japan does. But I think they're pretty even in dramas and music, not sure about games though. Maybe one day they'll catch up. ^^;

not even close. 3 rd largest economy-germany is miles away from japan(2nd) S.korea is nowhere near.its been that way for the last 12(?) years and itll stay that way for a long time to come.[ till the chinese take over the economic world]

back to the topic. in terms of entertainment- korea has already surpassed japan. music and tv shows(drama,variety). the japanese themselves prefer korean music to theirs...a lot of korean music has topped japanese music charts.

its not only the asian market.... dbsk( korean band) r the most photographed celebrities in the world (500 million times) and also have the largest official fan following in the world. - guiness book of world records for those

Both have a large amount of entertainment export, but in different ways. Japan has manga, anime, and games while Korea has kpop, k-dramas, and variety shows (I'm not saying the other country doesn't have these, but it's not as prominent in that country as the other).

I would say that they are about equal.
