In the 1880s at a time when most Europeans were denied access to the Japanese interior an Italian photographer managed to capture many images of Old Japan. These were then beautifully and realistically hand painted and serve as a remarkable record of a world long since disappeared nice pictures :3

Oh, it was about photography.
That is exactly what I thought 🤣
I was expecting something quite different with that title...

Wow, the Japan's past. It's kind of rural too. You don't really think of that much anymore since Japan is so technologically advanced.

Yeah, the color actually looks too off. I'm really wondering if it was added for whatever reason, especially considering that color photography was not really used until the early 1900's. They are beautiful pictures though. 😃
That's genius. I've never seen black & white photos that were painted over for colour.
If that's not artistic I don't know what is. Really awesome/beautiful work indeed.
It's always nice to see photos of Japan 100 years ago, and the colour is definitely a bonus.
It's also a shame that there are so few Western style paintings of places and people in Japan, since Japanese paintings are pretty crap (realism wise).

Of course you have! Isn't that what Andy Warhol did? If you watch old movies alot you will also see this technique used (I think about 1920-1960). HOWEVER, this is the earliest I've ever seen it. It's also the most gorgeous! I love this! I have to say my favorite is the one Chulian1819 posted, though. Some of them are a bit garish, for my taste.

Cool... very pretty and captivating. Also, amazing how they managed to color the photos so flawlessly, eh? 🙂
