This week's poll was suggested by our member Miss Gradenko. Do you have a preference in terms of reading a series that's already completed vs. ongoing?
You can submit poll ideas here: https://www.mangaupdates.com/topic/kilkdnn/site-manga-poll-suggestions
Previous Poll Results:
Question: How should SFX be handled?
Choices:
- The original should be replaced with a translation SFX - votes: 626 (36.8%)
- A translation should be placed next to the original - votes: 445 (26.2%)
- A translation should be in the margins - votes: 470 (27.7%)
- SFX shouldn't be translated at all - votes: 158 (9.3%)
There were 1699 total votes. The poll ended: May 10, 2025
I believe the last time we did this poll, more people preferred leaving the original SFX present and putting a translation somewhere else

I have a really difficult time with attention and focus, so it's easier for me to keep up with ongoing series than it is to binge completed ones, but a series being completed isn't a dealbreaker for me or anything.
I also like with ongoing series how if the site I'm reading on has comments, I can often participate in the discussion in a way I can't with a series that's been out for a long time, although again depending on the site it's on I may have to be there extremely early to get a chance to say anything anyone will notice, or in the case of a site like webtoons it doesn't matter how early I am, all the first level comments that anyone will ever see were already made 2 months ago by fast passers.

I dunno... I do follow several ongoings, but also from time to time we would binge a completed one... So no preference really

I read whatever catches my eye, whether it's complete or ongoing. Just because a series is complete doesn't mean I'll actually read the whole thing in the end
but I think I tend to get frustrated if the series is addictive/suspenseful and chapters are really slow. In that case, I prefer if the series were completed lol

I'll read something regardless of whether it's completed or ongoing. The only one I'm not a fan of is demo manga, where it's technically completed but, really, will never be completed in the format I originally wanted to read it in.
It's very rare that a manga causes me to read the novel, but a demo manga might prevent even that rare time.
I'm a jack of all trades but master of none. Too many jars and not enough hands.

If I’m reading a mangaka’s work for the first time, I prefer a completed series so I can get a full sense of their worldview and see if it resonates with me. If I end up liking their work, I don’t mind following their other ongoing series, no matter how long it takes between chapters.

I don't mind reading a completed or ongoing series, but I do have a few other criteria, especially for onoging ones:
-
It's not a newly released ones (You know, the ones that has only released 1-5 chapters). I need at least 10 or 15 chapters to read this series.
-
In case of the fantranslation ones, I need to know: a) when was the last time this group released the chapter of this series, and b) the release frequency.
I'll skip any ongoing series which last upload was years ago. I'll also skip any ongoing series with uncertain frequency release: every few months/years, for example. Unless this series is originally a monthly series, I'll just skip it.
It's a different case with official platforms which usually has steady release.
