So does anyone else have any special criteria when choosing a shounen/seinen manga? For me, and this goes mostly for shounen, if the first line is "I'm just an average ____ school student who's no good at athletics or classwork..." I drop it at the first page.

Also if it doesn't say flat out that he's an 'average student' and I get far enough to the point where he meets his katana-wielding love interest, I stop there. One Shakugan no Shana is more than enough.

For shounen/seinen that isn't yuri, shoujo-ai or hentai, I only look at action manga. When I get to a series page, if there is no mention of a female character in the main description (unless there's a sexy girl on the cover), I'll usually turn right around. Reading it has one of those obvious loser leads might work as well though.

First thing I look at is teh art, I just can't get into a series if the art is bad. Next I look to see if the characters sound interesting (no whiny failures) and if the plot doesn't sound too bad I'll read it.

If it says Shounen in the tags, I won't read it.
If it says Seinen, I will read it.

Nah, I pretty much read everything. Ecchi is usually only read if I really have nothing else to read. Seinen is probably the only demographics I don't look at the other tags at all 🤣

This.

Also, by looking at the cover (I know, don't judge a book by its cover, but oftentimes you really can). For example if it's got a girl with little clothes on posing in a fanservice-y way, I can assume the rest of the manga will have the same thing, and I don't read it.
I can't think of another example, but yeah... judge a book by its cover!
It's the first thing the publishers know you will see, so with it they advertise to the people who would enjoy it the most.

read almost everything, exept thing like yaoi, yuri, shounen-ai and shoujo ( most of the time ).
The rest well i prefer a good drawing than a poor one and a descent story.

I have don't specifically look for anything in particular, but according to my completed list, it seems that I prefer comedy with my shounen.

If I see some type of action or dialogue in the first volume that's so bad that it either makes me roll my eyes or rage, I'll drop it.
