So a few weeks or so ago, I overheard a friend yelling out loud in the school courtyard, "Why do people do the things they do in spite of everything?"

I have been trying so hard to come up with an answer for that, but it turns out, I just go through the motions of living rather than actually living. So I have no answer for her or myself.

So tell me what you think MU, why do people do what they do in spite of everything? I mean, like falling in love or talking to people or school or anything. I just don't know if I understand enough to answer question.

Biology. There are a lot of things ingrained in us that make us do what we do.
A lot of it we don't even realize impact our decisions.
I'm taking a Psychology 101 elective and think it's very interesting.

I think I would prefer a more psychological or philisophical answer rather than a pure science biological one.

This of course is assuming we have free will, and act upon personal desires with some strange form or fasion of hope.

Most of what we do we mostly do because we are expected to do it, we have seen someone else do it, or because we desire to do it. Which of these that weights the most at any given moment in any given individual varies, and thus we have differences in personalities. What these things actually mean often come from culture, and in turn, sub-culture. What "we desire to do" is often to fill the needs of the previous two but can also be due to inherent aptitudes or ineptitudes for which we can blame biology or god, whichever we prefer.

And since this is just personal observations, please consider my opinion to be more of an philosophical one then an scientific one.

Oh, and since you still are in school, I'm guessing you are quite young. Don't worry, wondering about the meaning of life is normal. Actually I think it is no matter how old you are, I guess you just become more comfortable not having answers the older you get.

Because life happens and people do what they do.

Because they want to or they need to I thought this was the obvious answer. If you are talking about something deeper, which I assume you are, then I dunno, I suppose it's different for everybody. Asking why people fall in love, talk to people or go to school is pretty dumb though...

Because it's human nature to act on your impulses.

When I say "in spite of everything" I pretty much mean something like "against all odds." So pretty much something that should be absolutely meaningless, and knowing full and well that everything is against you, but still doing it. i.e. If a person were to leave America and go to Europe with only $2k without a new job to go to or a place to live or even knowing anybody there with the hope of finding a new life.

If one feels that nothing is left for them at said place, they may consider leaving it even if the conditions aren't realistic.

because it defines who we are, those moments where you do something and you know after you've done it, you can't take it back, were you conquer your fears and you decide to do this for yourself. that's an amazing feeling.
