Why do girls feel the need to be pretty?

As for getting better jobs because you're good-looking...I suppose it's true if you're pursuing a non-academic career. But when getting a job where you actually have to study and make an impression through your knowledge and leadership qualities rather than your pretty face, it holds little water.
Not true, as in the case of one of my younger sisters. She's considered very beautiful by all standards (i.e. people from all backgrounds find her beautiful), and because of the additional confidence this gives her, she always gets her way in most things- including jobs. In university, she only just passed most of her courses. Two years ago, when she applied for her first job (civil engineering) at a private and elite company, they chose her over one of her guy friends who got almost all high distinctions for his courses. She got laid off because of the recession last year, but got into another elite company a month later. It was the only place she applied to.
Therefore, I think it's clear that appearance counts- even in highly academic-based jobs. After my unsuccessful search for a job as an admin assistant/research assistant some years ago, I decided to choose a career where they would HAVE to choose me for my qualifications, so now I'm doing a degree in speech pathology. There are about 90 students studying this course in my state, and employment after graduation is pretty much 100%. Never paid much attention to my looks before, and I wasted so much time because of it.

It's because they want to f*** and the only way u can achieve this is by dressing up nice and attracting attention, otherwise, there is no need to look pretty if you don't want attention from the opposite gender (or the same gender, let's not be sexist ok).

Because we live in a society where girls who aren't deemed 'pretty' barely get anywhere unless they're very skilled or lucky. /: Sad truth.
this.
Yeah this~
Although this would seem to be hardboiled logical,
I doubt they actually think of this at the same age as
they start to pay attention to their looks.
Being totally nonchalant towards future, but
stressing outward appereance quite a bit.
Guess the common thing that applies to all animals.
Trying to look sexually attractive.

hmm...I never wear makeup because its a pain to get off and i feel better without it. Of course i dress nicely sometimes when i go out, because, you know, i want to look good. there are some cute boys and girls out there 🙂
but also because if i dont get out of my pajamas my brain will shut down for the rest of the day, and i'll end up reading tentacle hentai.

Because being pretty gives you social advantages. It'll give you advantages in your work, relationships, and the way people treat you. People will want to approach you more and treat you with respect. (That is if you're a fairly respectable person.) And an extra hour in the morning is all it takes, no wonder any girl would feel the need. And for the shallow people out there, bottom line is the pretty girls get the pretty c*ck.

I don't think a ton of makeup and designer clothes is necessary, but sometimes girls just want to be pretty for themselves. =P It's up to me to decide what kind of hair is pretty on me or how much makeup I should use.
I wouldn't use makeup everyday, but a little bit won't hurt--especially if you're dressing up for something fancy.
Also, a decent appearance makes a good first impression.

Well this has to be the stupidest question ever asked on this forum
Obviously because its socially acceptable and being ugly equates to rejection from the majority of society.
I don't care what lie you want to spurt but Im sure you wouldn't be motivated to start a conversation with an ugly girl or be intimate with an ugly girl and depending on the degree of their ugliness you probably would judge them and be disgusted
Its the same for both sexes but the desire is probably greater for girls since guys are so shallow
No one gives a shit what trite garbage you write here.
Why NOT? =______=;; Well, for me, I don't want to look ugly.

I don't. I actually don't ever wear anything much more than lip balm, or lip gloss if I feel like there's an especially notable occasion.
If people want to look at me, they can look at me. I'm quite the plain Jane, but I refuse to hide behind a mask of makeup.
That, and I just don't want to waste time and money on cosmetics when I could be wasting both on things that are much more fun. A time will come, perhaps, where I have to prettify myself for some reason or another, but I'm avoiding it as long as I can.

Knowing that at least my hair is brushed, more obvious flaws hidden,
and clothes somewhat clean, makes me able to walk around
without feeling the weight of my negative thoughts.
If I walked out of the house without "that" confidence,
it'd be a little more difficult for me to function.
Also, it's nice to make an impression and be presentable,
when need be. Since that's how the stricter part of society is;
Jeans and a T-shirt mirrors laziness and carelessness.
And if anyone has noticed,
most people don't know how to properly take advantage of cosmetics.
In fact, most of the time, it makes girls look very unattractive.
And yet, they still apply it. Could be brainwashing from the media.
