This week's poll was suggested by jacob66. I'm not super happy with the choices, but feel free to comment below. If you don't know what "deus ex machina" means, look it up. It essentially means solving a problem by using a plot device that came out of nowhere

I have to reread the previous chapters to get my bearings again. Or read a summary at the very least

It does depend on the situation, but I honestly don't mind it as long as it's sufficiently well explained, doesn't ruin pre-established characterisation and worldbuilding, and serves future plot progression well. So I guess I'll go with the second-to-last option.

it's better than a Gainax ending
Only if it's creative.
I also read EU/US comics and am a librarian.

Prefer it only when its funny or creative. Of course funny should be considered part of creative.

A Deus Ex always feels like the author worked themselves into a corner and couldn't find a way out. Compare Naruto to Bleach. Naruto's story was clearly well thought out and every twist was planned well in advance. If a character was in a bad situation the author wasn't afraid to just let them die. Bleach felt like every chapter was planned a day in advance and every battle needed some Deus Ex to keep the story going.

I have mixed feelings about Deus ex machina in stories. On one hand, it usually offers a happy ending, which I love. On the other hand, it feels like the author painted themselves into a corner and couldn't think of a reasonable way out.

Love it because it makes a happy ending and you can finally breathe easily 🤣
Seriously, though. I've never minded deus ex machina if it means everyone lives happily.

I've never, ever seen a deus ex machina used creatively. Even the ending to madoka felt like a deus ex for me and ruined the whole experience of the story.
I have seen them used in strictly comedy series, however, and those are great. bear out of nowhere? the best.
;D
