Above is an authors view of online piracy.
Long story short he see's putting books on the internet the same as lending, and that people who admire the author will purchase their books after reading something for free.
I think he is completely right and I actually do end up buying stuff even if I've read it for free.
As for discussion:
Do you think this idea could be accepted even into manga considering scanlations and stuff?
Do you believe what he is saying is true?
Could this idea transfer to music or tv shows? (I think movies are very different)

Ever heard of Open Manga? It's this thing were you can directly support your author/artist. Haven't kept up with it but google it, it seems real interesting going along with the topic here.

^ The above URL is related to how I think free digital reading is not similar to lending at all. Some people do go and buy things after reading them online but not everyone does. Also, being a leech you think you are entitled to whatever manga you want to read, whenever you want, but you're disregarding the author's hard work and being a blood sucking "leech".
This is just saying that though it does help sales buy giving readers at least a taste or idea of what they're reading (or maybe just reading the whole thing online) many people will just take the free pirated version for granted

Oh, Baen Books has done something like this. They've gotten permission from some of their authors and have put those books online where people can read them for free. The point being that those who like them enough buy them, and the authors get known.
Personally, in both manga and books I'm very conservative when it comes to buying. I almost never buy something if I haven't read it. For books, I'll get it from the library and then buy it after if I like it enough to read it over and over. For manga, I go online. My physical collection is small because I've only started it recently, but if I like a manga enough I will buy it. But I have to really, really like it, because I read a lot of manga. And honestly, quality is just better when I have manga in book form, plus I never have to wait for a page to load. It's a better overall experience. I'm all about the hard copy, so if I like something, I want to get in a hard copy.
Of course, lots of people will read something and not buy it, but they mostly probably wouldn't have bought it anyways. But now, if they like it, they'll recommend it to other people who may actually buy it. So to authors and mangaka, you can't stop it, so you may as well take the bull by horns and do it in a way that will benefit you the most. All we can do is have a little faith in the readers.

Logistically, it's not quite the same as lending a book to an individual, but I think it's in the same spirit. In both cases, there will be people who choose to buy the work and people who don't. Personally, I often find myself wanting to make a donation after reading a manga online, but I never want to actually buy a copy because physical objects take up space. I am definitely looking forward to OpenManga for that reason.
