Why Gintama?

I've tried, and thrown down, this anime/manga two times already. What is the charm behind Gintama's Universe? Apparently the story develops nicely, and given its enormous chapter size there is a developed universe of the manga.
What do you guys think? Opinion? What are the highlights of Gintama, what makes this work so great that many people rave about it...
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Because it's Gintama!
Well, to tell the truth the first time I read it, I couldn't get past the first volume. The second time, it was great. I think it takes some volumes to get used to it but if you go past that wall you are done, and we get another Gintama fan 🤣
I like it because it's funny, the characters are great, and the ridiculous situations they get involved in are just that entertaining.

Huge array of unique characters, good character development for all of em, the funny stuff is hillarious and the serious stuff is bad ass IMHO.

I personally just can't take the drama attempts in Gintama too seriously, but when it goes for humour, it's hilarious.
"It is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science."
I first watched gintama because I had nothing else to watch
The first 19 or so episodes didn't catch my interest, yet I still kept watching but I got to one episode that made me laugh until I cried, thats when I started to love it for it's unique weirdness.
Many are interested in the gintokis "shiroyasha-past".

I hear you say "Why?" Always "Why?" You see things; and you say "Why?" But I dream things that never were; and I say "Why not?"
Personally, I have only watched the anime. But the 4th wall breaking, puns, and pointlessly epic plot lines amuse me.
I have not reached this "plot" this you speak of yet, but I suppose I have only really started.
Only twenty seven episodes so far...

^This. You must be a soulless robot. The fact that you came back again and again should tell you something.

i wrote a huge post for this and then the site went down for maintenance and i lost it D: sits in emo corner
Well I don't blame you for not getting hooked straight away, Gintama definately isnt for everybody. The humor is crazy and I'm pretty sure that nobody understands exactly what's going on all the time XD
Even people in Japan find it hard sometimes, which says something lol
But still, I definately recommend it. You're guarranteed to die laughing 99.99999999% of the time 😛
The turning point for me was this scene: http://tinypic.com/r/333lvya/7
Best motivational speech EVER.
That was the "no going back" line, once I crossed it I was doomed to be obsessed with Gintama for eternity.
And there are badass moments, though the really amazing ones are pretty rare, sadly T_T
The Benizakura arc pretty much made me jizz.
I wish there would be more of that, and hopefully there will be now that there's a new series 😀
Oh and yeah, the MUSIC. It's brilliant. 'nuff said.
I could go on but I'll spare you 😛
Hope I could help convince you, even just a bit ^-^
